KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The South Dakota State softball team rolled to a 13-7 win over Hampton in the first game on Friday, and then got a walk-off winner in the second game against Florida A&M, a 6-5 win to complete the sweep in the final contests of the Rebel Spring Games.
The Jackrabbits end the day with a 9-16 overall record, while the Pirates fall to 6-10, while the Rattlers fall to 6-14.
The Jackrabbits wasted little time in taking a lead, scoring five runs on three hits in the top of the first, they also got some help with one Hampton error. A two-RBI single from Abbey Murphy got the scoring started, with a Jordyn Sturgeon RBI single to follow that gave SDSU a 3-0 lead. Erin Mullen then knocked in a pair of runs before the rally ended for a 5-0 Jacks lead after one inning.
SDSU got an Ali Herdliska RBI single in the top of the second, but the Pirates fired back with seven runs in the bottom of the second, aided by two hits, four walks, a wild pitch, passed ball and an error to take a 7-6 lead through two complete.
Still 7-6 Hampton into the fifth, the Jacks erupted for seven runs of their own, with RBI from Erin Mullen, Danielle Steffo, Christian McKone, Dana Chavez and a three-RBI double from Lauren Chirnside the broke the game wide open.
Neither team scored after the fifth, as SDSU freshman Julia Andersen hung on for her first-career win. She gave up three runs on five hits, with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
SDSU scored first in the second game of the day with an unearned run and a Chirnside sacrifice bunt RBI. The Rattlers got one back in the second, two more in the fourth and two in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
In that final frame, the Jacks drew a pair of one out walks to put two on for Chirnside, who came up with two outs and smacked a double to drive both of those runners to cut the lead to 5-4. Herdliska came up next and ended the game with one swing of the bat, smashing a home run to left center that capped the 6-5, walk-off win.
Winners of three straight games and six of the 10 at the Rebel Spring Games, SDSU next plays on Tuesday, March 22 in a doubleheader at Drake at 2 p.m.
