STOCKTON, Calif. – Sacramento State broke the game open by scoring four unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning and went on to defeat South Dakota State, 11-3, in college baseball action Sunday afternoon.
Persistent rain and ensuing unplayable field conditions since the series opener on Friday forced the game to be moved to San Joaquin Delta Community College. The two teams are scheduled to play at least one game Monday at a location and time to be determined.
Sacramento State, 6-3 overall, scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning against SDSU starter Ryan Froom on run-scoring singles by Matt Smith and Gunner Pollman.
The Jackrabbits cut the Hornet lead in half with a run in the top of the second as Luke Ringhofer walked with one out and later scored on Skyler Wenninger's opposite-field single to right field.
An SDSU throwing error on the opening at-bat of the Sac State second opened the door for the Hornets' four-run frame. Chris Lewis plated Bronson Grubbs with the first run of the inning, which was followed by a run-scoring groundout and two-run double by Pollman, who finished the game 3-for-5 with four runs batted in.
The Hornets used the long ball to extend their lead further in the middle innings. Pollman led off the fifth inning with a home run, and Lewis and P.J. Floyd hit solo home runs off two different SDSU pitchers in the sixth.
For the Jackrabbits, redshirt freshman Kolton Michalski hit a double in his first collegiate at-bat to score a run in the sixth and Matt Johnson added a run-scoring single in the seventh.
Sacramento State held a 14-8 advantage in hits, with Leis, Kody Reynolds and Grubbs each tallying two hits. No player had more than one hit in the game for the Jackrabbits.
Froom surrendered 11 hits and struck out three batters over five-plus innings for the Jackrabbits, who fell to 0-10 on the season. Bryce Hanson pitched two innings of scoreless relief for SDSU.
Hornet starter Grant Kukuk allowed three runs – two earned – and struck out three batters against one walk in 6 2/3 innings to earn the victory.
