Softball Falls Twice to NDSU

The South Dakota State softball team played its first home Summit League games of the season on Friday, but came up on the losing end of both contests, falling 7-2 in the opener and 8-2 in the nightcap.

SDSU falls to 14-28 on the season overall and to 2-6 in The Summit League, while the Bison improve to 25-13 overall and remain undefeated in league play at 8-0.

Down 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth in the first game of the day, Ali Herdliska got the Jacks on the board with a solo home run to left. Her team-leading 13th dinger of the season cut the lead to 4-1.

NDSU got that run back in the top of the sixth, only to see Lyndsey Crist get it right back for the Jacks with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame.

The momentum wouldn't last though, as NDSU scored two more in the top of the seventh, and shut the Jacks down in their final chance.

The Jacks' two home runs represented their only two hits of the game, as NDSU's Jacquelyn Sertic dominated most of the game in the circle, striking out 14 and walking four in the complete game win.

SDSU didn't fair much better in the second game of the day, as the Bison got a grand slam home run from Zoe Stavrou in the top of the first inning to give NDSU an early 4-0 lead, an advantage that would grow to 6-0 in the sixth and to 8-0 entering the bottom of the seventh

The Jacks finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh with a two-RBI single from Mallory McQuistan, but the rally fell short, as Sertic came on in relief to secure the doubleheader sweep.

The Jacks look to take one game in the series on Saturday, when they meet the Bison in the series finale at noon.
