South Dakota State and IUPUI split a pair of one-run games in a Summit League softball doubleheader Saturday at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium. The Jackrabbits won the opener, 3-2 in 11 innings, while IUPUI rallied for a 2-1 victory in Game 2.
The Jackrabbits moved to 17-30 overall and 3-8 in league play, while IUPUI ended the day 14-28 overall and 3-10 in The Summit League. The two teams are scheduled to play the series finale at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Game 1
Freshman
Ali Herdliska homered and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Jackrabbits prevailed, 3-2.
Herdliska led off the 11th with her second hit of the game, a double to right center and took third on a bunt single by
Lyndsey Crist before scoring the game-winning run with one out.
A freshman from Solon Iowa, Herdliska tied the game at 1 with her team-leading 14th home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
The game remained tied at 1 until the eighth inning, when IUPUI took a momentary 2-1 lead on an RBI single by Maggie Good, who tallied two hits and drove in both Jaguar runs. SDSU countered in the home half of the eighth as
Devan Larsen singled with one out, Herdiska drew a walk and Crist extended the game with a base hit to center to plate Larsen.
Bryana Clark pitched all 11 innings for the Jackrabbits, striking out seven and walking four while scattering nine hits.
Game 2
IUPUI's Taylor Chitwood singled in two runs in the top of the seventh to secure a split of the doubleheader with a 2-1 victory.
Chitwood's heroics came after the Jackrabbits scored the frist run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Christian McKone led off the frame with a base hit, stole second and scored on
Julia Andersen's two-out double to left field. Andersen was the lone player with more than one hit for SDSU, going 2-for-3 in the game.
Roni Patterson tallied three of the Jaguars' 11 hits in the contest.
SDSU pitcher
Ashlyn Bender took the loss in a solid effort. The left-hander struck out three and did not walk a batter in a complete-game effort.
Kaitlynn Moody struck out nine for IUPUI to earn the victory.
