South Dakota State women's soccer fell in its season opener on Friday, dropping a 1-0 contest to Utah State at Fishback Soccer Park after a late goal sunk the Jackrabbits strong effort throughout.
Â
SDSU (0-1-0) had 12 shots with three on goal for the game. Utah State (1-0-0) took eight shots and had three on goal.
Â
Jennie Scislow led the team with four shots (one on goal) for the night, while
Kyli Nelson and
Ashley Adams had two shot attempts apiece. Adams and
Madison Chapman each had one shot on goal.
Â
In the net,
Nicole Inskeep played all 90 minutes with a near-shutout, allowing one goal with two saves.
"We played some great soccer for portions of the game, but we were just kind of unlucky," head coach
Lang Wedemeyer said. Â "It was against a good team and they played good soccer, but it felt like we had momentum in the second half. One mistake though and that was the game. Â Some players stepped up and played well and contributed, but we need to find our scoring for Sunday."
Â
The Jackrabbits pressured throughout the opening 45 minutes but were unable to find the net early on. Â
Ashley Adams had two shots in the first half with one on goal, firing a shot at 19:39 that was saved by a diving Grace McGuire.
Â
At the break, SDSU had four total shots with two on goal and Utah State had five shots, putting two on goal.
Â
The Jackrabbit offense continued to press in the second half, outshooting the Aggies 8-3 over the final 45 minutes of regulation.
Â
Early in the second period, SDSU's
Kyli Nelson struck two shots well, just missing goals for the Jackrabbits in the 55th and 59th minutes. The first attempt was a shot from the top of the box that was deflected by an Aggie defender, and the second sailed high after a through ball from teammate
Nicole Hatcher.
Â
Later in the frame, Hatcher had a shot of her own from the box that trickled just feet to the right of the post, keeping things even near the 15-minute mark.
Â
With just over five minutes to go, Utah State tipped the scales in the game with a goal from Jessica Brooksby at 84:48, taking advantage of an SDSU defender falling in the box.
Â
SDSU threatened the remainder of regulation as Scislow had two shots blocked in the final three minutes, but the Jackrabbits couldn't find an equalizer to force extra time.
