Scouting the Opponent
UC Irvine is coming off a successful 2016-17 campaign that saw the team go 21-15 with a 12-4 record in Big West play.
The Anteaters will be led by juniors Jonathan Galloway and Brandon Smith, who are the lone returning starters from last year's team that earned a trip to the NIT.
Galloway was the 2017 Big West Defensive Player of the Year, averaging 4.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game to go with 40 blocked shots. The forward led UCI in rebounding (7.6) and blocked shots (40) as a sophomore.Â
Smith scored 3.1 points per game and grabbed 3.2 rebounds on average, making his presence felt on the defensive end with 23 blocks and 27 steals for the year.
Russell Turner is in his eighth season leading the Anteaters and has a 139-105 record at the school.
UCI holds a 2-0 lead in the all-time series with South Dakota State, claiming wins in a pair of matchups last year. The Anteaters defeated the Jacks, 73-58 in Irvine and won 63-52 at the Sanford Pentagon.
Daum Named to Award Watch Lists
Mike Daum has earned a spot on three national award watch lists for the 2017-18 season, being named a preseason favorite for the Karl Malone Power Foward of the Year, Oscar Robertson Player of the Year and Lute Olson Player of the Year awards.
The Karl Malone Award is presented by the Naismaith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Named after Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its fourth year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball.
By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2018 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2018 Karl Malone Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 6, 2018.Â
Daum was selected as one of 32 players on the 2017-18 Oscar Robertson Trophy Preseason Watch List, announced Nov. 6 by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. The award is presented to the national player of the year by its namesake at the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio.
In mid-March, the USBWA will announce its 2017-18 All-America Team and, at that time, finalists will also be chosen for the player of the year. Once finalists are announced, the entire USBWA membership will vote for the winner of the Oscar Robertson Trophy.
He was announced as one of 40 selections on the CollegeInsider.com Lute Olson Award Watch List Nov. 6 as well.Â
The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player who has played at least two seasons.Â
The 2017-18 Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award will be announced on March 31, 2018 at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Event in San Antonio, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
Dynamic DuoÂ
Teammates Mike
Daum and Reed
Tellinghuisen are back after leading the team in scoring a year ago, and rank among the nation's best as a scoring duo with over 2,400 points between them in their careers. The Jacks are fifth in total career points as a pair, and fourth nationally in scoring average from a year ago.
Preseason All-Conference Team
Mike
Daum and Reed
Tellinghuisen made repeat appearances on the Summit League's Preseason All-League teams, announced early-October.
Daum was the Preseason Player of the Year with First Team honors while
Tellinghuisen picked a Second Team nod for the second straight season. Daum is the second Jackrabbit to be named Preseason All-Conference and the first to do it twice, joining Nate
Wolters (2012-13).
Battle on the Boards
Winning the rebounding battle was key to the Jackrabbits' success last season, as the team was 16-1 when out-rebounding its opponent. In games the team had the same or fewer rebounds, however,
SDSU held a 2-16 mark.
Second Half Success
After posting a 2.8 points per game average through nonconference play last season,
Chris Howell burst onto the season as a top scoring option for the Jackrabbits in the second-half of the season, averaging 11.4 points per game in Summit League play with double figures in 10 of the final 12 games in the season.

Sharing the Captaincy
Reed Tellinghuisen,
Tevin King and
Mike Daum will serve as team captains for the 2017-18 season after establishing themselves as leaders and top performers throughout their careers, on the court and off. Telllinghuisen averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game a year ago, hitting 74 3-pointers for the season. King was a defensive standout for the Jacks, leading the squad with 36 steals on the year while grabbing four rebounds per contest. Daum is back after averaging 25.1 points and 8.1 rebounds on a nightly basis, shooting 51.4 percent from the field.
Tacoma Talent
Tacoma, Washington native David Jenkins Jr. is the lone West coast native on the Jackrabbits' roster this season, and will look to bring his high-flying scoring style to the State lineup in his freshmen season.
Â
Jenkins scored over 2,000 points in his high school career before spending a year at Sunrise Christian Academy Prep School. He was named as a newcomer to watch in The Summit League by TheAthletic.com's John Rohde, and has inserted himself into the conversation for significant playing time through the preseason.
Â
Holding the Key
Incoming junior transfer Brandon Key will be crucial to the Jackrabbit success this season, inheriting the starting point guard spot after the departure of last-year's graduate transfer
Michael Orris.
Â
Key averaged over seven assists per game last season at Southwest Tennessee Community College, ranking fifth in NJCAA.Â
Â
He was named as a newcomer to watch in the league by TheAthletic.com's John Rohde in preseason.

Down two at the break after a hot-shooting South Dakota Mines squad hit five first-half 3-pointers, State responded by outscoring the Hardrockers by 15 in the final frame to secure the win.
The turning point came near the 14-minute mark of the second half, when down 42-41 the Jackrabbits went on a 9-0 run to create breathing room.
The advantage reached double digits moments later, and the largest lead of the night came at 2:29 when Jenkins Jr. buried a 3-pointer from the corner to put SDSU up 78-59.

IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's basketball team defeated Alaska Anchorage, 73-66, in an exhibition game Friday evening in front of 3,035 fans at the Bren Events Center.
Sophomore Tommy Rutherford led the Anteaters with a team-best 18 points to go along with six rebounds, five of which were on the offensive glass. Sophomore Eyassu Worku also had 12 points in 16 minutes, while reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Year Jonathan Galloway pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds.
Redshirt freshman Justin Wertner added nine points and five assists, and junior Elston Jones notched four blocks.
As a team, the 'Eaters shot 41.3 percent from the field, while holding the Seawolves to 36.5 percent.
Alaska Anchorage scored the first five points of the night before Rutherford got UC Irvine on the board with a layup at the 18:12 mark. UAA would go up by as many as eight before the Anteaters went on an 18-0 run to take a 28-10 lead with 2:27 to go. Wertner sparked the rally with a pair of 3-pointers. UCI had gone 0-for-5 from beyond the arc before Wertner entered the game and hit his first shot from the corner.
The Seawolves then ended an eight-minute scoring drought, but the 'Eaters stayed out front, holding a 30-25 cushion at the half.
Both teams regrouped and came out strong after the break as they traded points until Rutherford scored six unanswered to put UC Irvine on top, 42-31, at the 16:56 mark. The Anteaters continued to roll, increasing their advantage to 18 with a Worku layup making it 55-37.
UCI kept a comfortable lead before Alaska Anchorage used a late 17-4 spurt to close the gap to 69-64 with 1:38 remaining. Rutherford then responded with a layup and after a defensive stop a pair of free throws from Galloway put the game out of reach.
Maleke Haynes led four Seawolves in double figures with 13 points, all of which came at the free throw line.
