VERMILLION, South Dakota -- South Dakota State stormed back from 14-down to set up a wild finish in front of 5,265 fans at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Saturday, but eventually fell 91-89 to in-state rival South Dakota.
SDSU (12-16, 5-8 Summit League) finished over 50 percent from the field for the eighth time this season, hitting 30 of 58 attempts (51.7 percent) including 13 3-pointers. At the line, SDSU was 16 of 20.
USD (18-10, 9-4 Summit League) shot 52.4 percent on field goals and 14 of 28 beyond the arc.
The rebounding battle proved to be the difference as SDSU was out-boarded, 37-27, and allowed 15 offensive rebounds that led to a five-point USD edge in second chance points.
Reed Tellinghuisen led all scorers with a career-high 28 points and sank eight 3-pointers.
Mike Daum added 22 as both Jacks snagged six boards while
Michael Orris added 14 points for SDSU.
Chris Howell led the team with seven boards.
Momentum swings told the story all night, as both teams held seven-point leads in the first half that didn't hold up. USD opened up a 13-6 lead through the opening four minutes before SDSU responded and built a seven-point lead of its own, 34-26, at 7:44. That advantage didn't hold up either, however, as the Jacks were outscored by 12 over the final seven minutes and went to the locker room down 49-43.
Down 14 with 15:19 to play, SDSU put together a 26-11 run that included five Tellinghuisen 3-pointers to regain the lead at 6:13. Up 76-75 at that point, the Jacks and Coyotes traded punches until Matt Mooney sunk three consecutive 3-pointers to push USD ahead for good.
Still, the Jacks didn't quit and kept things interesting, cutting the lead to one with eight seconds remaining on a Daum bank-shot. USD's Trey Burch-Manning missed both free throws with 3.8 seconds on the clock to give State a chance, but Tellinghuisen's 50-footer hit the side of the rim as time expired.Â
Head Coach T.J. Otzelberger
On today's game ...
"I thought it was certainly a fun atmosphere and environment to be a part. It's great for the state of South Dakota. I thought both teams played very hard and it was very competitive, well-played game on both sides. They probably made one more shot than we did down the stretch and that ended up being the difference. Credit to Matt Mooney hitting some big shots down the stretch, those were difference makers. I was happy with our guys, how we bounced back, how we fought and how we competed but just came up short."
On offensive adjustments ...
"Obviously we want to get the ball in Mike's hands in the interior as much as we can, it was just a little bit stuffy in there and congested. I thought in the second half we flowed a little more and just played. Mike did a great job, he was really unselfish at the top of the floor setting some screens and freeing guys up. It allowed our players to drive the ball to the basket and get some open shots. The one thing I know about our team offensively is that the guys play for each other and are really unselfish. It doesn't matter if it's Mike or Reed or any of those other guys, it don't think our guys care who scores the points. We just need to be very intentional on trying to take advantage or what our opponents are doing defensively.
On Reed Tellinghuisen's play ...
"I think it's huge. Reed has proven he's a great player in this league and h's invested a tremendous amount of time in his game. His character and work ethic speak for itself. We talk about it a lot that if you invest in yourself the game is going to pay you back. I feel like any time you walk by the gym and hear the ball bouncing he's in there getting shots."
