VERMILLION, S.D. -- South Dakota State dropped an 8-0 contest to South Dakota in the weekend finale Sunday at Nygaard Field.
The Jacks are now 14-23 overall and 1-5 in Summit League play.
The Jacks had just two hits on the day, both singles by
Brittney Morse and
Yanney Ponce while
Ali Herdliska walked.
Ashley Bender (6-9) took the loss, throwing 1.1 innings with four runs allowed before
Madison Hope entered and tossed the final 4.1 frames, giving up four runs (two earned) with a strikeout.
Down 2-0 after the first, State's best scoring opportunity came in the second when Herdliska drew a leadoff walk and took second as
Mallory McQuistan reached on an error. From there, a fielder's choice put McQuistan on second and
Lyndsey Crist on first, but a groundout ended the threat.
USD pushed another two runs across in the second, and though the Jacks had runners in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames, the Coyotes put the game away with two more in the fourth and a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.
