FARGO, N.D. - South Dakota State finished the first day of competition at The Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday night.

The Jackrabbits are sitting in third place, both men and women, after the first round in Fargo, N.D. The men have 48 points and the women have 24 points through five events. State has 10 Jackrabbits moving onto the finals tomorrow and three have already won their respective event.

Highlighting the first day of competition was senior
Colton Bender winning the weight throw competition with the school record, and championship record, of 68-11.75 feet.

It is his fourth time resetting the school record that was 1-05.75 feet better than the championship record. Bender won the event for the first time in his career.

Junior
Rachel King recorded her personal-best mark in the 3,000m (9:28.16), which is the new school record. She beat her previous-best mark (9:34.21) set in the 2017 Summit League Indoor Championships.

Her new time of 9:28.16 is better than her previous-best by 6.05 seconds.

The St. Michael, Minn. native, has now won the indoor championship 3,000m in back-to-back seasons.

Sophomore
Evan Hieber is competing in his second Summit League indoor heptathlon, notching 3,801 points and four PR marks through four multi-events and another event in day one.

His best finish of the day was in the shot put, recording a personal-best mark (43-04.25) for a third-place finish. Hieber also recorded his career-best in the 60m dash (7.42) and the long jump (20-09.25).

Hieber competed in the open 60m hurdles as well, finishing 10th with a career-best mark (8.53). He has improved his career-best mark for the seventh time, improving by 0.96 seconds since last indoor season.

The Sioux Falls, S.D. native, will have the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and the 1,000m to compete in tomorrow.

Kyle Burdick won his second consecutive indoor championship 3,000m, finishing with a time of 8:18.06 minutes. He is undefeated in the event, winning four races.

Trent Francom recorded his career-best (16-07.00) jump at the indoor championships, beating his previous-best mark by five inches.

Francom's mark finished fourth in the meet and is good enough to tie the school record with his older brother, Reagan Francom's 2017 jump, and Lynn Olson's 1996 jump.

Miatta Flemister-Smith posted her career-best mark in the 200m (25.47). She beat her previous-best time by 0.02 seconds and remains ninth on the school's top 10 all-time list.

The Champlin, Minn. native, also moved up from sixth on the school's top 10 marks to second all-time in the 60m dash, finishing fourth in the prelims (7.60). She is 0.11 seconds away from the school record held by Carly Carper (7.49).

Day two of The Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships will start tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. with the final three events of the heptathlon.

Field events will start with the women's triple jump at 11:30 a.m. The first event for the men will be the high jump at noon. The rest of the field events will kick off early Saturday afternoon.

Track events will begin with the women's mile at 1 p.m. and conclude with the men's 4x400m relays set for 3:55 p.m.
