2017 Recap (From Iowa State)
Iowa State posted one its best seasons in recent years by compiling an 8-5 overall mark and a 5-4 record in Big 12 play. ISU gained national attention when it upset No. 3 Oklahoma in Norman on Oct. 7 for its first-ever top-5 road win in school history. ISU downed another top-5 opponent (TCU, 14-7) to close out a perfect October (4-0).Â

The Cyclones qualified for their first bowl game since 2012 with an appearance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, defeating No. 19 Memphis, 21-20, on the Tigers' home field. It was just the fourth bowl victory in school history.

Iowa State matched its school record for conference victories and won seven games in the regular season for the first time since 2005. ISU tallied an eight-victory season for just the ninth time in school history (first since 2000) and its five-win improvement from last season (3-9) ties for first in school history.

ISU averaged 29.2 points per game (third-best in school history) and hit 40 or more points in a game five times, tying the school record for 40-point games (1971, 1976). ISU outscored its opponents 193-122 in the second half.

The Cyclones ranked second in the Big 12 and 26th nationally in scoring defense (20.9) and ranked third in the Big 12 in total defense (366.2).

The outstanding season earned head coach Matt Campbell Big 12 Coach of the Year honors as well as a finalist for national coach of the year honors (George Munger Award, Lombardi Trophy).

Cyclone DC Jon Heacock was one of 15 semifinalists for the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation's best assistant coach for his efforts.
 Offense (From Iowa State)
Expected to have nine starters and 22 letterwinners returning on offense from the 2017 season (returning starters: TE Chase Allen, So.; WR Hakeem Butler, Jr.; OL Sean Foster, So., OL Julian Good-Jones, Jr.; QB Kyle Kempt, Sr.; OL Josh Knipfel, Jr.; OL Bryce Meeker, Jr.; RB David Montgomery, Jr.; RB Mike Warren, Sr.).
 QB Kyle Kempt (#17, 6-5, 224, SR): Iowa State was 5-3 overall as a starter under Kyle Kempt's leadership. He was an honorable mention All-Big 12 honoree. He was 161-of-243 for 1,787 yards in his eight starts, completing 66.3 percent of his passes with 15 TDs and three INTs. Had two 300-yard passing games, tying for fifth on ISU's single-season record book.

Kempt broke Iowa State's career marks in completion percentage (66.5) and passer rating (146.1). Set the Iowa State school record in completion percentage (66.3) and his 15 touchdown passes ties for fifth on ISU's single-season list.
 RB David Montgomery (#32, 5-11, 216, JR): Was named First-Team All-American by Pro Football Focus and earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors, one of four Cyclone running backs to earn first-team honors by the Big 12.

He had forced 109 missed tackles this season to lead the nation. Led the team and ranked third in the Big 12 in rushing at 88.2 ypg. He had six 100-yard games, tying for eighth on ISU's season list, and totaled 1,146 rushing yards to rank 16th on ISU's season chart. One fumble in 294 touches in 2017.

A threat as a receiver, ranking fifth on the team in receptions (36). Averaged 110.9 yards from scrimmage (88.2 rushing, 22.8 receiving) on the year

Montgomery had 77.9 percent of ISU's rushing yards and 59.7 percent of ISU's rushing attempts on the year. Had three-straight 100-yard rushing games in 2017
 TE Chase Allen (#11, 6-7, 240, JR): 2017 All-Big 12 Second Team. Started nine games and had four catches for 39 yards.
 WR Deshaunte Jones (#8, 5-10, 185, JR): Posted 28 catches for 273 yards in 2017. Had six 40-yard receptions in career, one last year.
 WR Hakeem Butler (#18, 6-6, 225, JR): Honorable mention All-Big 12 and a member of the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Watch List in 2017. Was second on the team in receiving yards (697) and TD catches (7). Was tied for third on the team in receptions (41) and ranked 47th nationally in yards per reception (17.0). Posted two 100-yard receiving games and tallied four of the top six longest plays (receptions) on the year (74, 67, 57, 52).
 Defense (From Iowa State)
Expected to have six starters and eight letterwinners returning from the 2017 season (returning starters: DE JaQuan Bailey, Jr.; LB Willie Harvey, Sr.; DL Ray Lima, Jr.; CB D'Andre Payne, Sr.; CB Brian Peavy, Sr.; LB Marcel Spears Jr., Jr.).
 DE JaQuan Bailey (#3, 6-2, 251, JR): 2017 honorable mention All-Big 12. Started the last 20 games for ISU. Led the team in sacks (7.0) and had 34 tackles in 2017. Tied for third on team in TFL (11.0) and in forced fumbles (2).
 DT Ray Lima (#76, 6-3, 302, JR): 2017 honorable mention All-Big 12. Started nine games. Forced double teams, freeing up space for ISU's linebacker crew to make plays. Had 25 tackles and 4.5 TFL.
 LB Marcel Spears Jr. (#42, 6-1, 215, JR): 2017 honorable mention All-Big 12 (Coaches); Second Team (Phil Steele). Defensive MVP of the Liberty Bowl with 11 tackles, 2.5 TFL and one sack. He was a two-time Big 12 Def. PoW (Texas Tech, TCU) in 2017. Spears was second on the team, sixth in the Big 12 and 61st nationally in tackles per game (8.2). Second on the team with three double-digit tackle games (Iowa- 17; Texas- 14; Memphis- 11). He was tied for team lead with two forced fumbles and tied for second on team in interceptions (2).
 LB Willie Harvey (#2, 6-0, 224, SR): 2017 honorable mention All-Big 12. Has 29 career starts. He was fifth on the team in tackles (76), second on the team in TFL (11.5), fourth on the team in sacks (4.0) in 2017. Tied for third on team in takeaways (1 INT, 1 FR). Has the most TFL (22.0) among active Cyclones. Led the team with 78 tackles in 2016.
 CB Brian Peavy (#10, 5-9, 194, SR): 2017 All-Big 12 Second Team (Coaches); First Team (ESPN). He was third on the team in tackles with 88 in 2017. Ninth in the Big 12 in passes defended (11) and led team in takeaways (2 INT, 2 FR). Peavy was 25th in nation in fumbles recovered (2). His 232 career tackles is the second-best active total on the team and has five career INTs. His 34 career starts is fourth-best on the team.
 CB D'Andre Payne (#1, 5-10, 188, SR): 2017 honorable mention All-Big 12. Has 20 career starts, 12 in 2017 year. Tallied 48 tackles and 6.0 TF with two takeaways (1 INT, 1 FR).
