Arkansas-Pine Bluff Notes (UAPB Record: 1-1) Series: It is the first meeting between the Golden Lions and the Jackrabbits. UAPB finished the 2017 season 2-9 overall (1-6, fifth place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference). The head coach, Cedric Thomas enters as the new head coach for the team in 2018.
 Offense: Through two games of the 2018 season, the Golden Lions have won and lost a game - averaging 42.50 points per game (Week 1: L, 34-30; Week 2: W, 55-0) with an average possession time of only 23:14 The offense has gathered 45 first downs (29 passing, 15 rushing, one penalty), gained and average of 140.0 yards rushing on 73 attempts and scored four TD's, thrown for an average of 413.0 yards on 38-of-54 and six TD's - averaging 15.3 yards per attempt. Overall, the offense has gained an average of 553.0 yards per game and 8.7 yards per play with a 23.81% on third down (5-21). The QB's have not thrown an interception but the team has had three fumbles, two lost, and given up seven sacks through two games. They have scored seven of their 11 TD's from more than 25 yards out, including three from about 40 yards out (37-yd run, 38-yd pass, 40-yd pass), a 58-yd punt return, and 66-yd and 77-yd passes. The other four TD's came in the redzone, being four-of-seven in scoring TD's and six-of-seven on scoring points inside the 20.
 Defense: Through two games, UAPB has allowed 34 total points — all in one game —and held an opponent scoreless, and averaged 44:15 minutes of possession time for the opponents. The defense has allowed 34 total first downs (17 rushing, 12 passing, five penalty), allowed 218.5 yards rushing per game on 94 attempts and three TDs, and allowed 177.5 passing yards per game 22-for-44 and two TDs. The opponents have an average of 4.6 yards per carry and 8.07 yards per attempt through the air, totaling 396 yards of offense per game and 5.7 yards per play, and allowing six third down conversions (20.69%, 6-29). The D has not caught an interception, but has forced three fumbles, grabbing one of them, and three sacks.
 Game-by-Game Recap (From UAPB) Sept. 2 vs. Morehouse College (NCAA DII program from Atlanta, Ga., member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference): The Golden Lions fell just short of beating Morehouse, losing a fumble on the three-yard line with five seconds left to play, down 34-30. Their quarterback, Shannon Patrick went 17-of-25 for 451 yards and three passing touchdowns. Patrick and receiver Josh Wilkes connected on seven passes for a school-record 244 receiving yards and two touchdowns, including a 77-yard long.

The UAPB offense total 579 total offensive yards while their defense surrendered 568 total yards to the Maroon Tigers in the inaugural game of the 2018 season - Golden Lions' head coach Cedric Thomas' first career game.

Golden Eagles' running back talled 20 rushes for 109 yards and a touchdown while teammate receiver, Kolby McNeal produced three catches for 101 yards in front of a packed house of 5,734 fans.

Defensively, UAPB had four individuals four more than six tackles (Shawn Steele led the way with 12 tackles, nine unassisted). The team gave up 305 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 48 attempts and allowed 262 passing yards and two more TD's on 14 completions.
 Sept. 9 vs. Cumberland University (NAIA program from Lebanon, Tenn., member of the Mid-South Conference): The Golden Lions notched their first victory of the season, and for Coach Thomas, after a two-hour weather delay - scoring with ease in a 55-0 rout of the Phoenix.

UAPB QB Shannon Patrick played only in the first half, going 10-for-11 for 227 yards and three touchdowns. His receiver Josh Wilkes had six catches for 126 yards and two TD's in the first half, with the duo connecting on a 77-yard touchdown on the fourth play of the opening drive. It marked the first UAPB victory at their home stadium, Simmons Bank Field.

The Golden Eagles added 31 points in the second quarter after only scoring seven in the first, finishing the half ahead of the Phoenix by 38-0. They scored on a five-yard rushing touchdown from Taeyler Porter, a 58-yard punt return from Tyrin Ralph (had another punt return TD, but it was called back for holding), and two passing TD's - a 40-yard TD pass from Patrick to receiver DeJaun Miller and a 17-yard grab from Wilkes with three seconds in the half.

RB Taeyler Porter notched another six points after a 37-yard scamper and back-up QB Roger Totten II scored on a one-yard rush to tally 52-0 through three quarters.
The offense grabbed 26 first downs from 164 yards rushing on 41 attempts and 363 passing yards on 20 completions. The Golden Eagles scored three touchdowns on the ground, averaging four yards per carry, and another three more through the air, averaging over 18 yards per completion.
The UAPB defense surrendered 132 yards rushing on 46 attempts and 93 passing yards on eight completions. Individually, the defense had five Golden Eagles get six or more tackles with Je'Kevin Carter getting nine and one sack.
Golden Lion Players to Watch QB Shannon Patrick (#10, 6-2, 205, JR): has recorded 27 completions out of 36 attempts through six quarters of action (sat the second half in blowout win vs. Cumberland, 55-0) ... has six total TD passes, three from each game and 678 total passing yards (Game 1: 451, Game 2: 227) ... his TD throws - first game: 38 yards, 12 yards, 77 yards; second game (first half): 66 yards, 40 yards, 17 yards ... was 17-25 in his first game (68%) and 10-11 in the second (90.9%).
 RB Taeyler Porter (#2, 5-10, 185, JR): leads the team in attempts (32, next-best is 13), net rushing yards (175, next-best is 34 yards), and TD's (3) ... he is averaging 5.5 yards per carry and 87.5 yards per game with a season long of 37 yards (TD run) ... has scored all the rushing TD's except for one (back-up QB Roger Totten II has one in blowout win) ... scored from - Game 1: 29 yards; Game 2: five yards, 37 yards ... has not recorded a catch.
 WR Josh Wilkes (#3, 6-3, 183, JR): leads team with 14 catches, seven in each of the two games, for 420 yards and four touchdowns ... added a school-record 244 yards receiving in his first game with two TD's and 176 yards and two more TD's in his second game ... his TD catches came from - Game 1: 38 yards, 77 yards; Game 2: 66 yards, 17 yards ... leads team in catches (14), yards (420), average per catch (30), TD's (4), season long (77), and average per game (210).
