South Dakota State women's soccer hosted its first-ever GOALD Game earlier this season, partnering with Sanford Health Cure Kids Cancer! to raise awareness and support during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. SDSU raised a total of $3,984.99 for Cure Kid's Cancer! and nearly doubled its fundraising goal of $2,000.
Jackrabbit soccer sold GOALD Game t-shirts for $10 at the field, with proceeds benefiting Sanford Children's Cure Kids Cancer!, and raised funds online for a "Pie in the Face" contest. On game day, the Jacks hosted honorary captain Axel Toft and his family. Axel and SDSU captainsÂ
Carina McLennan andÂ
Hailee Fischer (another honorary choice for the day) took part in a pregame coin toss, and Axel and his family "pie'd" select members of Jackrabbit athletic programs as part of the festivities.
"We are extremely appreciative of all the support with the GOALD Game and the Jackrabbit soccer community's investment in bringing awareness to childhood cancer," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "It's a humbling experience to witness families fight this terrible disease, and our program is proud to donate nearly $4,000 to the fight to end childhood cancer."
Fischer was a driving force behind the GOALD Game, organizing the events in honor of her cousin, Ian. More information on Fischer's story can be found
here.
The Jackrabbits return to the field Friday to open a weekend homestand, facing Western Illinois at 6 p.m. from Fishback Soccer Park.
