South Dakota State women's soccer is celebrating its 20th season as an NCAA sport at South Dakota State University. The previous 19 seasons has seen the program win nearly 200 games, claim 11 conference championships (four Summit League tournament titles, six Summit League regular season trophies and one United Soccer Conference tournament crown), and make four trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Â
In looking back at the past 20 years and celebrating the success of Jackrabbit soccer, fans were invited to vote on an all-time Top 11 Team. Over 400 ballots were cast by Jackrabbit alumni, student-athletes and fans.
Â
GoJacks.com will reveal the team in four parts this week, and the Jackrabbit soccer program will recognize the all-time squad Oct. 6 during its contest against North Dakota.
Forward: Kayla Braffet (2008-11)
Kayla Braffet arrived on campus as part of the historic 2008 squad, and before leaving after the 2011 season played in more games and tallied more assists than any Jackrabbit had previously done. From Carlock, Illinois, Braffet had 19 goals and 18 assists over 80 career appearances, graduating fourth on the career points record list (56).
Â
Braffet was a part of the 2009 and 2011 Summit League regular season championship teams, and in 2011 claimed league Offensive Player of the Year honors with a five-goal, five-assist campaign. A two-time All-Summit League and 2011 Third Team NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region selection, Braffet was part of 49 wins in her time at State. That four-year total is the highest among Jackrabbit senior classes.
"KB was athletic and fearless as a wide forward, because she believed that she could beat anyone," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "That makes her one of the best forwards ever to play for Jackrabbit Soccer. Beyond that, her story of quitting her teaching job to pursue and ultimately achieve her goal of being a pro soccer player is truly legendary."
 Â
Forward: Jennifer Briggs (2000-02)
Jennifer Briggs left an enduring mark on South Dakota State's soccer program, setting an all-time points and goals record that may never be touched. The two-time All-North Central Conference was pivotal in the foundation of the program, scoring the first-ever Jackrabbit goal while racking up 39 total scores (94 points) in her three seasons.
Â
The Osseo, Minnesota native was named to the All-Central Region team as a senior, sending 13 goals into the back of the net while helping the Jackrabbits to their first-ever winning record. Briggs racked up double-digit goals in all three seasons wearing the yellow and blue, laying the foundation for what was to come.
Â
"Briggs had one of the most unique journeys as a Jackrabbit, as she originally came to play basketball, transferred out, and then back in when we added soccer in 2000," former head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. "She was a pure goal scorer who led that inaugural team in many ways. She scored the first-ever goal in Jackrabbit soccer history against Northern State and played a vital role helping the team grow and develop in those early years."
Â
Forward: Diana Potterveld (2012-15)
Perhaps the most decorated attacker in Jackrabbit soccer history,
Diana Potterveld reset Braffet's assist record in her four years as student-athlete, rose to third in career goals (26) and finished second in total points (73).
Â
After bursting on the scene as the 2012 Summit League Freshman of the Year, Potterveld continued her standout play and was named the 2014 Summit League Female Student-Athlete of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. A three-time All-Summit League First Team selection, she found the net six times as a junior and added 12 assists, helping the Jacks return to the NCAA Tournament where they battled No. 2 seed North Carolina.
Â
SDSU made a repeat performance in the 2015 NCAA Tournament in Potterveld's senior year, claiming it second-straight Summit League Tournament title after the Fort Collins, Colorado native scored twice (along with
Dani Patterson) in SDSU's 3-0 victory over North Dakota State in the title game.
"Diana was a true dual-threat forward; one that could play back to goal but also facing goal," Thompson said. "She was a pain for other teams to deal with because of her persistence and determination, and was a unbelievable teammate and leader because of her rock-solid character. She truly lived out trying to be her best regardless of the circumstance."
