Fifth-year Missouri State head coach Dave Steckel and his team have endured a rough season, as they are headed toward their 10th losing season in a row. The history of the team isn't hindering the optimistic coach, as he recently told reporters after their last outing that he "loves" his team and they "are going to keep chipping away" until they do turn the corner.

Picked to finish last in the Missouri Valley preseason poll, the Bears have four games left in the season to set in motion a turnaround.
 OFFENSE
The Bears are a team that has had success through the air as they are third in the conference in passing offense, accumulating 217.9 passing yards per game.

Senior quarterback Peyton Huslig is the man in charge in throwing the ball down the field. Described as a "phenomenal quarterback", by South Dakota State head coach John Stiegelmeier, Huslig put on a passing clinic in their Oct. 5 win against Western Illinois.The Kansas native threw for 315 yards and four touchdowns in an overtime victory.

Senior wide receiver Tyler Currie was an honorable mention all-MVFC selection last season. So far in 2019, Currie leads the conference in receptions per game (5.3) and he also leads his team in receiving yards per game (55).

Junior wide receiver Lorenzo Thomas can also get the job done. The Texas native leads his team with three receiving touchdowns, as well as being second on his team in receiving yards per game (43.8)
 DEFENSE
Despite the results, the Missouri State Bears have a "very skilled defense" and a defense "you can't take advantage of," according to Stiegelmeier.Â

Missouri State's defensive performance against No.1 North Dakota State on Oct. 19 was called their "best performance of the season" by the Springfield News-Leader. Bison starting quarterback Trey Lance was even quoted as saying that "at halftime we talked that it felt like we were losing almost," even though the Bison were up 15-0.

Senior linebacker McNeece Egbim is one of the best players at his position in the conference. The Texas native has three games this season where he has exceeded 10 tackles, including a season-high 15 against Western Illinois. Egbim leads his team with 63 tackles and is fourth in the conference in tackles per game with nine.

Senior linebacker Angelo Garbutt can also get his fair share of tackles. A second-team all-MVFCÂ honoree in 2017, Garbutt garnered 10 tackles in the Bears' Aug. 29 season opener against Northern Arizona. He ranks second on the team with 37 tackles.
 OVERALL
The Bears have never beaten the Jackrabbits during Dave Steckel's tenure.

The last time the Bears were able to defeat the Jackrabbits dates back to Oct. 19, 2013 when the Bears won at home against a then-ranked No.15 South Dakota State team.
