Previewing the Game
Jackrabbit men's basketball hits the road for the first time in 2019-20 this weekend, opening up a two-game trek to California Saturday at CSU Bakersfield. The Jackrabbits and Roadrunners tip at 7 p.m. PST / 9 p.m. CST from the Icardo Center.

Saturday's matchup is part of the Summit League /WAC Challenge scheduling agreement, now in its second year.Â

Eric Henderson is off to a 2-0 start.
CSU Bakersfield opened its season at home Tuesday, topping Notre Dame De Namur, 103-51. The Roadrunners have reached postseason play in each of the last four seasons, claiming a pair of victories in the 2019 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.

This is the sixth meeting all-time between the programs, with SDSU holding a narrow 3-2 lead in the current series. The Jackrabbits won the previous matchup, 53-49, at the World Vision Classic in Logan, Utah, but are 0-2 all-time in Bakersfield.

Last Time Out
South Dakota State men's basketball topped Peru State 86-58 Thursday night at Frost Arena to advance to 2-0 on the season.

Douglas Wilson led the scoring attack with 13 points (6-12) while also grabbing a team-high eight boards.
Matt Dentlinger and
David Wingett were also in double figures, scoring 12 apiece.

Arians added seven rebounds while Wingett and
Noah Freidel had six boards each, helping the Jackrabbits tally 50 total rebounds for the second game in a row.

All 13 Jackrabbits saw the court and found their way into the scoring column, with 43 points coming off the bench.
SDSU recorded 23 points off turnovers, taking advantage of the Bobcat's 20 turnovers.

Neither team started fast, with a trio of lead chances and three ties in the opening 13 minutes. Down 21-20 with 8:22 left in the first half, though, the Jackrabbits flipped a switch and took off for good. A pair of Dentlinger free throws gave the Jacks a lead they would not give back at that point, as SDSU reeled off a 22-2 run to build a comfortable advantage.

Up 42-28 at the break, SDSU kept its momentum in the second half, rolling off 11 unanswered after a quick layup from the Bobcats to start the final frame's scoring. The Jackrabbits never looked back from there, picking up their second-straight victory to open the season.

South Dakota State rang in a new era with a pair of home victories this week, topping UT Rio Grande Valley, 70-57, and Peru State, 86-58.

Through two games,
Douglas Wilson leads the team with 18.5 points per game, opening his career with back-to-back double-digit scoring performances. Wilson has added 13 rebounds (6.5 percent) and is shooting 64 percent from the field. The two-time NJCAA All-American and the 2018-19 NJCAA Player of the Year averaged 21 points and nearly nine rebounds a game last year at Kirkwood Community College.

Matt Dentlinger turned in a double-double in the season opener (17 points, 14 rebounds), and is averaging 14.5 points and 10 boards per game through two games. The big man is 9-of-15 from the field (60 percent) and has six offensive rebounds.

Brandon Key (10.5 points per game) is in double figure scoring as well, pacing the team in assists (4.0 per game) after dishing six in the UTRGV contest. Key is back for the Jackrabbits after redshirting a year ago. He had 112 assists in 2017-18.

Alex Arians is the most experienced Jackrabbit as a sophomore after starting 33 games a year ago. Arians has logged 27.5 minutes per game this season and had 13 points (6.5 per game) and 17 rebounds (8.5 average) for State.

Noah Freidel, the 2019 Argus Leader Class A Player of the Year, has started both games in his first collegiate season and is playing 19.5 minutes per game.

Baylor Scheierman (4.5 points per game, four assists) and
Alou Dillon (6.0 ppg) each have 11 rebounds off the bench, while
David Wingett has hit a pair of triples and
Owen King is logging 13.5 minutes per contest.

King appeared in all 33 games last season with averages of 4.1 points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists over 16.7 minutes per game.

Wingett joined the Jackrabbit squad in late May as a transfer from Memphis and received an NCAA waiver for immediate eligibility. The Winnebago, Nebraska product scored over 2,200 points in his high school career and spent a season at Bull City Prep Academy.

Scheierman is a two-time Class B All-State, All-Area and All-Conference selection from Aurora, Nebraska, and as a senior averaged 22.1 points, 9.8 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game while helping his team to a state tournament berth.

The Jackrabbits have held opponents under 60 points in both games while averaging 78 points on the offensive end, posting double-digit rebounding margins in both contests as well.
SDSU is shooting 46 percent as a team and averaging 50 boards per game.

About CSU Bakersfield
The Roadrunners are coming off an 18-16 campaign a year ago and return 50 percent of their roster, including a pair of co-captains: Justin Edler-Davis and De'Monte Buckingham.

Edler-Davis is logged time in 61 games over his career and averaged 8.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game last year.

Buckingham sat out last year due to NCAA transfer rules, but scored 12 points with seven rebounds, eight assists and three steals in his 2019-20 debut. Buckingham previously played at Richmond, where he was the 2017 Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Year.

Taze Moore and Shawn Stith each had 18 points in last Tuesday's victory for the Roadrunners, while Greg Lee put together an eight-point, eight-rebound effort.

- Since 2011-12, South Dakota State has won 94.6 percent of its home games, a mark that top all Division I programs in that span. South Dakota State won 34 consecutive games from Jan. 30, 2014 to Dec. 28, 2016. It ended as the nation's second-longest active streak.

New Faces, New Roles
South Dakota State's lineup will feature new roles and new faces throughout the season, as the Jackrabbits return only 16.9 percent of their scoring from 2018-19, and 10.7 percent of their 3-point makes. SDSU's 15.8 points per game returning ranks fifth-lowest nationally, and the 16.9 percent back is the second-lowest margin.

- State posted back-to-back 50-rebound games to open the season. The last time an SDSU program had 50-plus rebounds in consecutive games was Dec. 15 and 27, 2002 against Finlandia (60) and Fort Lewis (58). The Jacks also had three-straight games with 50-plus rebounds that season: Nov. 23, 29 and 30.
- Douglas Wilson's 24 points on Nov. 5 are the most in a Jackrabbit debut dating back to 2000-01, when game-by-game statistics were readily available.
- South Dakota State has not lost three consecutive games since January 2017.
- SDSU went 13-0 when holding opponents under 70 points last season (11-9 when not) and scored 70-plus points in 32 of 33 contests. The Jackrabbits were 12-0 when holding opponents under 70 points in 2017-18. The Jacks have accomplished the feat in both games this year.

Jackrabbits in Two Scheduling Agreements
Summit League teams are in year two of scheduling agreements with the Western Athletic Conference and Big Sky.

The Jackrabbits took on Grand Canyon last year in the first year of the Summit League/WAC challenge, defeating the Lopes in the 2018-19 season opener. Year two of the challenge sends SDSU to face CSU Bakersfield Nov. 9.

The scheduling agreement with the Big Sky is a four-year contract. The Jackrabbits will play the following games as part of the deal:
- 2018-19: Montana (home), Eastern Washington (away)
- 2019-20: Idaho (home), Montana State (away)
- 2020-21: Eastern Washington (home), Montana (away)
- 2021-22: Montana State (home), Idaho (away)

Tough Tests
South Dakota State has four Power Five (ACC, SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, PAC-12) opponents on the 2019-20 schedule, facing USC, Nebraska, Arizona and Indiana this season.

South Dakota State has seven wins over Power Five programs since joining The Summit League in 2007, picking up victories over Iowa State (2008), Iowa (2010 and 2017), Washington (2011), TCU (2015), Minnesota (2015) and Ole Miss (2017).

SDSU's wins over Iowa and Ole Miss in 2017-18 came in the shortest time frame of any Summit League team since 1998 (seven days). The Jackrabbits are the fifth league team to post a win over separate Power Five conferences in the same regular season, and the first to do it since 2009.

South Dakota State men's basketball earned two first-place votes and was tabbed fifth in the 2019-20 Summit League men's basketball preseason poll, released in October.
