STREAKS & NOTABLES TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND
- The men's 60m and 200m record list has been a rotating turn-table this year. So far, five 60m top-10 marks have been added with Jr. Sam Zenner resetting the school record twice and adding another three marks that could have been. He has owned the record since his first career attempt (2017 Jim Emmerich - Jan. 21, 2017).Â
- In the 200m, four marks have been added in 2019 with three of them fast enough to be the school record prior to 2019 season. The school-record 200m has been traded between Zenner, who reset it in the season-opener (21.50), and So. Coby Hilton, who held it for a week (21.41, at UND v. SDSU Dual) before Zenner reclaimed it (21.00) at the Jim Emmerich. Jr. Landon Larson would have reset the school record (21.78) at the Jim Emmerich as well if it weren't for Zenner and Hilton.
- Hillton posted his fourth PR reset (and tie) of the season in the 60m last weekend - trimming 0.10 seconds from his 2018 PR (6.97 at the 2018 SDSU Last Chance, Feb. 16). Has been in the school's top 10 since the SDSU Holiday Invite in December of 2017.
- There are three ties in the 60m - So. Daniel Clarke (6.86) at No. 2 with Frank Blalark ('01), Larson & Hilton (6.87) are tied at No. 4 with LeAndre Kennedy ('16), and Fr. Emmanual Phoulom-Smith (6.94) is tied at No. 8 with JaRon Harris ('09).
- Jr. Miatta Flemister-Smith has added PR's in the 60m (7.53) and 200m (25.11) that are both in the school's top 10 (60m - No. 2, 200m - No. 6). She has won all but two competitions - individually or on a relay - she has competed in this season, with one of them where she was DQ'd in the 60m but had the fastest prelim mark (Jim Emmerich).Â
- Jr. Wyatt Gatrost added the first men's 800m top 10 mark since the 2017 season last weekend with the No. 6 all-time fastest mark (1:51.91) at the Husker Invite.
- Freshman Mile Marks: Fr. Thomas Breuckman missed the school's top 10 mile list by 5.53 seconds from the Husker Invite - still adding a PR (4:15.66). Fellow freshman, Ellie Friesen, was 0.31 seconds from her PR in the mile - which is No. 8 all-time.Â
- Burdick's Quest: Sr. Kyle Burdick is approaching the school record in the mile and 3,000m - already adding a PR in the mile last weekend in the Meyo Mile (4:02.27).
- If he reaches sub-four minutes, it would be the state's first collegiate sub-four minute mile and knock of SDSU's and the state's collegiate record-holder, head coach Rod DeHaven, to No. 2 all-time.Â
- In the 3,000m, Burdick will aim for a sub-eight mark which would be the school and state's collegiate record - both held by SDSU's Brad Lowery ('05, 8:05.04).
- Last week four of SDSU's runners at the Husker Invite were within 15 seconds of the 3,000m top 10 list (10th all-time - 8:24.54, Fr. Joseph Minor-Williams - 8:27.90, So. Micah Mather - 8:28.85, Fr. Ben Olson - 8:30.86, Jr. Lukas Nelson (from the Jim Emmeich) - 8:26.61)
- So. Oksana Covey has a two-meet winning streak in the 400m - posting her PR and the school's No. 8 all-time mark in the first one (UND v. SDSU Dual) and was within the PR by 0.32 seconds in her second one (UND Indoor Open).
- Sr. Rachel King cut 31.09 seconds off her 3,000m season-best at the Meyo Invite last week and is within 1.63 seconds of her PR & school-record mark she set last year en route to five school-record marks last year (IN: Mile, 3,000m, 5,000m, OUT: 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m).
- High Flying High Jumpers: Fr. Addison Eisenbeisz record 5-06.00 which was good enough for No. 9 all-time while Jr. Chloe Holtz posted her second-consecutive PR reset (5-05.75) after tying her previous-best (5-03.00) on five separate occasions. Eisenbeisz is the first to enter the top 10 since 2017 in the high jump.
- So. Trent Francom - the only Jackrabbit to reach beyond 17 feet in the pole vault - was able to finally take sole possession of the indoor school record (16-10.75) after being in a three-way tie with his brother, Reagan Francom ('17), and Lynn Olson ('96) at 16-06.75. He has been on the indoor top 10 since his first meet and was tied for the record since last year's indoor league championships. He reached 17-02.75 at Drake last year and 17-00.00 at the outdoor league championships.Â
- So. Noah Huber has been a top-three finisher all five times this year in the shot put - making it seven for his career.Â
- Sr. Logan Ammons was No. 5 all-time (58-06.00) in the weight throw prior to the 2019 season, but has since moved into the No. 3 spot thanks to four personal-best resets this season (now 61-03.00). He has added 2-09.00 feet so far this year however, he has an unattached-best from last year set at 63-03.50, which would still be No. 3 all-time.
- Jr. Bryant Courter holds SDSU's longest winning streak - having won six triple jump competitions that date back all the way to the 2018 season-opener.Â
- Coming in close behind him is Burdick with an undefeated career record in the indoor 3,000m (5, 2017 SDSU Last Chance - present: 2019 Jim Emmerich).
- Also, King had an undefeated streak in the indoor 3,000m of five (2017 Jim Emmerich - 2018 Summit League Championships)
- Jr. Evan Hieber totaled five event-wins en route to his first hept. win when he reset his personal-best heptathlon score (5,126) - just 303 points behind the school record (5,429 - Ben Jasinski, '11). He previously had only won two indoor shot put events in his career. He added first career wins in the long jump, high jump, 60m hurdles, and pole vault.Â

USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings places a rank order to a program's "squad" of athletes in a particular event, using the cumulative season-best qualifying marks from a team's top-four ranked athletes on the national desending-order list. As with the national decending-order list for qualifying and seeding purposes, marks are subject to be converted due to track size and/or altitude. A team must have four or more athletes with a valid season-best mark recorded with TFRRS to achieve a ranking in a particular event.
Â
In the opening regular-season rankings (Jan. 23), the State men received their highest-ever regional ranking - being seventh in the Midwest and the No. 2 Summit League school. Last week, the men fell to No. 13 in the region and 119th nationally. The women were ranked No. 25 in the first two regional rankings.Â
Â
ALL-COLLEGE WEEKLY MARKS
The Jackrabbit track and field teams have had 13 all-college top-10 weekly performances so far this season, with junior
Sam Zenner having the most (4) and senior
Kyle Burdick with the second most (3) - according to USTFCCCA.org. SDSU has had two individual women make the list in the season-opening meet (
Miatta Flemister-Smith and
Lauren Van Dyke).
Â
LAST TIME OUT: Second Weekend Away from Home
The South Dakota State track and field teams endured one of their last weekends away from the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex this indoor season, adding 28 personal-best marks (17 from the men, 11 from the women) and six top 10 all-time marks (six men).
Â
A majority of the Jackrabbits competed at the Dakota Realty Alumni Meet while others added marks at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. Seniors
Rachel King and
Kyle Burdick performed at the Meyo Invitational.
Â
Sophomore
Trent Francom led the charge in the DakotaDome for the SDSU track and field student-athletes by breaking the three-way tie school record in the pole vault and taking sole possession of the title.
Â
He finished runner-up this afternoon (16-10.75) and added four inches to his indoor best that now ranks second in The Summit League and tied for 51st nationally as of Saturday. He already owns the outdoor record and is the lone Jackrabbit that has surpassed 17 feet (outdoors). He broke the three-way tie with his brother, Reagan ('17), and Lynn Olson ('96).
Â
Senior
Logan Ammons notched his personal-best in the weight throw (fifth, 61-03.00) for the fourth time this season. He remains No. 3 all-time but added another 7.75 inches in the event while unattached freshman
Dominick Etherington added personal-best marks in both the shot put (eighth, 51-00.00) and weight throw (16th, 43-07.75).
Â
Sophomore
Coby Hilton opened up the meet hosted by the Cornhuskers with his fourth PR reset in the prelims of the 60m on Friday night - moving into a three-way tie for the No. 4 all-time mark.
Â
Both Hilton and junior
Sam Zenner got into the finals of the 60m while teammate
Landon Larson missed the final cut by 0.007 seconds. Zenner finished third in the finals (6.84) after scoring 6.80 seconds in the prelims (would be the school record but already owns it with a PR of 6.77 seconds). Hilton finished behind Zenner in fourth (6.89) in the finals.
Â
On Saturday's events, junior
Wyatt Gatrost penciled his name on SDSU's 800m top-10 list at No. 6 after finishing fourth overall (1:51.91) with a 2.25-second PR trim. For the women's 800m, sophomore
Oksana Covey finished with the meet's second-fastest time out of the early afternoon heat (not the invite section) en route to a season-best mark that was 2.49 seconds from her PR and the school's No. 2 all-time mark (2:11.80).
Â
Senior
Kyle Burdick finished with a personal-best of 4:02.27 for fifth place in the Meyo Mile, sixth overall - trimming 2.62 seconds. He moves up to No. 2 all-time for SDSU behind Coach DeHaven (4:00.95).
Â
Senior
Rachel King finished sixth overall (9:29.79) in the 3,000m with a season-best by 31.09 seconds, short of her PR and school-record mark by 1.63 seconds.
JACKS' XC - DEHAVEN'S DYNASTY
The Summit League announced Jackrabbit Head CoachÂ
Rod DeHaven won the 2018 Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year on Nov. 29.
Â
It is his seventh men's honor, which is the second-most ever on the men's side since the honor was introduced in 1982. DeHaven has won the men's honor seven out of the 12 years the Jackrabbits have been in the league, which is the most in that span.
Â
Overall, Coach DeHaven has won eight cross country coach of the year honors, garnering the women's accolade in 2008. He has also earned a Summit League Indoor Coach of the Year honor on the men's side in 2017.Â
Â
XC YEAR-END RECAP
Summit League Men (Oct. 28) -Â The men's cross country team returned to Brookings after the league championships as the three-time defending Summit League Champions, winning their latest championship by 37 points and notching the school's lowest point-score since 2007 (23 points).
Â
The 23-point score was two points under SDSU's 2016 winning score (25) that started the championship run. The 2016 crew had six guys in the top-10, three in the top-five, while the 2018 squad had seven Jackrabbits in the top 10 and eight total winning All-League recognition. Summit League rivals South Dakota and North Dakota State were held to a combined three top-10 finishers.
Â
Five First-Team All-Summit League honorees for SDSU is now the most-ever First-Team All-League honors for SDSU - beating the previous-best set in 2016 (four - won the championship). Three Second-Team All-League members is now tied for the most from South Dakota State (tying the 2014, 2013, 2009 teams). Eight total All-League honors is now the most-ever for South Dakota State in The Summit League era (beating the 2016 championship team's six All-League).
Â
The 37-point margin of victory was the largest-ever by SDSU, beating the previous-best - a 27-point victory over South Dakota in 2012. As far as The Summit League's margin-of-victory records go, it was the second-largest win since South Dakota State joined in 2007 - just five points behind Southern Utah's 42-point win over Oakland in 2007. Southern Utah also holds the all-time record for margin-of-victory, beating Oakland by 60 points in 2006 when they had a perfect score (15).
Â
As for average team times, the Jacks had a pace of 25:23.45 as a team - a time that beats the next-best average by 45.45 seconds from North Dakota State. All Jacks finished in the top-20 with SDSU'sÂ
Michael Schwinghamer (eighth Jack) earning the last Second-Team All-League honor (14th overall). Schwinghamer, along withÂ
Evan Fick (ninth Jack, 17th overall), outpaced two other school's first-scored runner and four other school's second-scored runner. Schwinghamer nearly beat NDSU's and Purdue-Fort Wayne's No. 1 runners (they finished 12th and 13th with Schwinghamer in 14th).
Â
Summit League Women (Oct. 28) -Â The women's team scored 61 points in a close team-finish behind South Dakota (won, 51 points) and North Dakota State (second, 52 points). It was the second-closest finish among the top-three schools in the league championships (10-point difference between the winners and third place).
Â
The closest was in 2007 when Purdue-Fort Wayne and Southern Utah tied for first (67 points each) and South Dakota State recorded third (68 points). The next closest finish among the top-three schools was in 2016 when South Dakota won (43 points), North Dakota State finished second (48) and South Dakota State placed third (55) - a 12-point difference.
Â
For the Jackrabbit team, it was the fifth-lowest overall team score in The Summit League Championships and the second-lowest team score when they've placed third in the league (2016's team finished third, scored 55 points).
Â
South Dakota State added two First-Team All-Summit League honorees (
Rachel King,Â
Emily Donnay), and nearly a Second-Team All-Summit League award-winner (
Anna Donnay - missed by 0.05 seconds), to help keep the point-total low. The Jacks have had multiple First-Team All-League performers only three times, with the most being three in 2016 (other times: 2015 - two, 2013 - two).
Â
Jackrabbit Newcomers Take League by Storm (Oct. 28) -Â Both freshmanÂ
Joseph Minor-Williams andÂ
Thomas Breuckman could have taken home The Summit League's Newcomer of the Championship for the men, as they finished 0.6 seconds from each other in the league's top-10 individual finish. However, Minor-Williams (eighth, 25:38.6) edged out Breuckman (ninth, 25:39.2) for the honor.
Â
Minor-Williams helped SDSU complete the sweep of The Summit League's Newcomer of the Championship awards, as fellow freshman on the women's side -Â
Ellie Friesen (18th, 22:12.3) - won the Newcomer of the Championship on the women's side. Friesen was the second-ever Jackrabbit on the women's side to win the honor - since seniorÂ
Rachel King was honored as a freshman 2015.
Â
Since the award was changed to Newcomer of the Championship in 2008, only two other schools have claimed both newcomer awards in the same season (2010 - NDSU, 2012 - USD). South Dakota State and North Dakota State are tied for the most Newcomer of the Championship award recipients with six each (Bison: two men, four women; Jackrabbits: four men, two women).
Â
Jacks Pace Summit League at NCAA Regionals (Nov. 9) -Â The South Dakota State men's and women's cross country teams finished their 2018 campaigns in Peoria, Ill. at the NCAA Midwest Regionals with the men finishing 10th (288 points) and the women tying their best-ever place-finish and scoring their lowest point-total, 13th (369 points).
Â
It was the fifth time the men's team has finished in the top 10 of the Midwest Regionals, while no other active Summit League school has finished in the top 10 of their respective region. The women were the second-best Summit League team in the Midwest Region, knocking off the league championship runner-up NDSU.
Â
The Jackrabbits were led by a couple of seniors on both sides who earned NCAA All-Region honors - the only Summit League school to have a multiple All-Region honorees.
