The South Dakota State track and field teams qualified 11 entries for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Sacramento, Calif. on May 23-25, announced on Thursday, May 16. A total of 11 Jackrabbits will make the trip out to Hornet Stadium, with senior
Kyle Burdick qualified to run two events and sophomore
Coby Hilton set to run in three events.
It is the second-most entries and student-athletes SDSU has sent to the prelims, qualifying at least 10 entries for the fourth consecutive year. The men are tied with the most entries and student-athletes ever with eight and six, while the women have entered at least three entries every year since being DI eligible in 2009.
Â
The Jackrabbits will bring the largest amount of track athletes out of The Summit League with two entries on the women's side and six entries on the men's side (rest of league has six women, five men/relays).

Â
Senior
Rachel King enters the prelims with the best men's or women's ranking out of the league on the track, and only the fourth woman ranked in the top five of her respective event (eighth men's or women's league athlete ranked in the top five of their respective event).
Â
The four-time NCAA West qualifier finished the prelims in Sacramento last year in the ninth spot with her then-PR and school-record mark (9:57.75) to qualify for the championships in Eugene. She earned All-America Honorable Mention with her 23rd-place finish (10:27.92).
Â
King has run the 3,000m steeplechase twice this season, first at Stanford with her fifth school-record reset and runner-up finish (9:54.44), and then once again at The Summit League Championships where she posted a 32.70-second win in the event (10:09.85).
Â
She is currently ranked seventh on the NCAA's performance list, 12th on FloTrack's individual rankings (projected Second Team All-America), and 16th in the world. If she makes it to the championships again, the St. Michael, Minn. native would be the second-ever SDSU student-athlete to make it in back-to-back seasons (Sara Ackman - 2009-2010).
Â
King is the fifth Jack to qualify in the steeplechase (King - 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016; Megan West - 2016, 2015;
Halie Mechels - 2016; Tera Potts - 2013; Nicole Davis - 2010) as she also qualified for the 5,000m (16:19.64) but scratched. She would have been 38th on the declaration sheet.
Â
Also competing on the track on the women's side is sophomore
Oksana Covey, making her second 800m appearance in the post-season. She has the 26th-best mark on the declaration with the school's fastest-ever mark in the event (2:06.09).
Â
The 2019 outdoor 800m league champion appeared at the prelims during her freshman campaign in the 2017 season at Austin, Texas, finishing 29th (2:10.09). She was the first-ever female to qualify for the event at the DI prelims and is now a part of the third consecutive year a Jack has competed in the event (Covey - 2017, 2019;
Krista Steele - 2018).
Â
Continuing her accomplished freshman season is
Addison Eisenbeisz, as she will be the fourth Jackrabbit, second freshman (Wirth in 2011), to compete in the high jump at the West Prelims (Lora Shearer - 2009*; Mary Wirth - 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015; Kali Olson - 2013; Monique Mack - 2016 ... Shearer was in the Midwest Regionals).
Â
Eisenbeisz has the tied third-best all-time mark outdoors (5-08.75) and the eighth-best indoor mark (5-07.00) for SDSU, behind Wirth and Mack while being tied with Olson for the outdoor all-time list.
Â
For the men, senior
Kyle Burdick competes in his third consecutive 1,500m and 5,000m prelims, qualifying for the NCAA Championships back in 2017 to be named Second Team All-America (3:43.78). Last year, he qualified for the quarterfinals in the 1,500m in Sacramento, finishing 18th (3:46.66).
Â
The Rapid City, S.D. native's season-best (3:44.74) from the Bryan Clay Invite is his best mark since the NCAA Championships back in 2017. He is the last Jackrabbit on the men's side to qualify for the championships, third overall.
Â
Sophomore
Coby Hilton will have a busy weekend as he qualified for two individual events (100m, 200m) and is a member of the 4x100m relay team. He managed to get into the preliminary 100m with his personal-best and school-record mark set in the prelims at The Summit League Championships last weekend (10.39), ranking 38th on the declaration list. He will be the second-ever male SDSU 100m sprinter at the prelims, third overall (
Daniel Clarke in 2018, Carly Carper in 2017, 2016).
Â
For the 200m, the Marshall, Minn. native has the 27th-best mark on the declaration list (20.92), a mark he's scored twice this season. The Summit League champion in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay has ran NCAA West qualifying marks on his last four 200m attempts (21.04, 21.02w, 20.92w, 20.92).
Â
Hilton is first male SDSU student-athlete to compete in the 200m at the DI prelims, third overall (Heather Wollman - 2009*, Carly Carper - 2015 ... *Wollman qualified for the Midwest Regionals). Carper and Hilton are the only two Jackrabbits to qualify in both the 100m and 200m, while the 4x100m relay team is the first-ever Jackrabbit squad on the West Prelims track.
Â
Speaking of the relay team, sophomore
Daniel Clarke is the lone Jackrabbit sprinter on the team to have West Prelims experience, running the 100m last year as a true freshman (37th, 10.52). Clarke will join Hilton and freshman
Emmanual Phoulom-Smith, along with junior
Sam Zenner, as the No. 18 4x100m relay squad on the declaration sheet (40.12) out of 24.
Â
There is only one other Summit League relay team, Oral Roberts' 4x400m relay team, ranked 23rd out of 24 that qualified.
Â
Sophomore
Trent Francom enters his second consecutive NCAA West Preliminaries with the best Jackrabbit ranking on the men's side at No. 20 on the declaration sheet. He is among four other Summit League pole vaulters after finishing third in the outdoor league championships with his PR and school-record mark (17-05.50).
Â
Last year, the Huron, S.D. native finished 28th in Sacramento (16-04.75) and came back this season to reset both the indoor and outdoor school records (17-00.00 indoors). He is the second-ever male to qualify for the regionals, third overall, and first-ever to qualify more than once (Tyler Schiferl - 2009*; Amy Leiferman - 2015 ... *Schiferl qualified for Midwest Regionals).
Â
Senior
Logan Ammons qualified for the hammer throw in dramatic fashion, scoring his PR and school's second-best mark in the event at The Summit League Championships last weekend to finish runner-up after coming into the competition with the eighth-best mark (198-05.00).
Â
The Kadoka, S.D. native increased his PR over the season by 5-09.00 to earn his first NCAA West Prelim appearance with the 43rd-best mark on the declaration sheet. He will be the second consecutive Jackrabbit in the third straight year competing at the prelims in the hammer throw, third male since becoming DI.
Â
Past hammer throw competitors - (
Colton Bender - 2018, 2017; Jake Brinkmann - 2012; Sean Burns - 2011, 2010; Silvia Zanini - 2017; Brooke Garner - 2013, 2012, 2011; Michelle Schuch - 2010, 2009*; Jennifer Mack - 2010).
