MACOMB, Ill. - Senior
Logan Ammons made his latest hammer throw performance, his best one.
Â
The Kadoka, S.D. native threw his second personal-best reset of the 2019 outdoor campaign, adding a total of 5-09.00 so far this season, to earn his first career All-Summit League honor and move up to No. 2 on South Dakota State's all-time list (second, 198-04.00).
Â
It was his first throw of the Summit League competition that earned him a runner-up finish and moved him ahead of Jake Brinkmann (2012, 195-01.00) and behind former teammate and school-record holder
Colton Bender (2018, 206-09.00) on the all-time list. As of Wednesday night, Ammons' mark is 43rd in the NCAA West Preliminary performance list.Â
Â
Sophomore
Noah Huber followed up Ammons for a 12th-place finish (178-03.00) and personal-best mark in his first career Summit League hammer throw competition. His personal-best increase of 9-07.00 helped him climb to the No. 7 all-time mark.
Â
The Jackrabbits also had two multi-event competitors in the men's decathlon, as both junior
Evan Hieber and senior
Peter Bates nearly achieved first-day personal-best marks.
Â
Hieber came within 10 points of his personal-best first-day mark set at the 2018 league championships (3,620) by scoring two personal-best marks and finishing fourth overall in the first-day standings (3,610).
Â
His first PR came in the opening event, placing seventh (11.67) in the 100m, while his second PR led to his first career outdoor win in the high jump (6-07.00). The high jump mark is an outdoor (by three inches) and overall personal-best mark (by one inch).
Â
The Sioux Falls native also recorded three season-best marks that included two top-three finishes (long jump: third - 22-01.50, shot put: third - 41-04.25, 400m: fourth - 52.94).
Â
To conclude the opening day of action in Macomb was Hieber in the javelin, finishing eighth with a season-best mark (166-01.00).
Â
Fellow decathlon Jackrabbit, Bates, was 11 points from his day-one personal-best mark, sitting in eighth place after five events (3,135). His first-day PR score was set at the Bryan Clay Invite earlier this season (3,146).
Â
The senior from Waverly, Iowa scored three personal-best marks, starting with the 100m (fourth, 11.52) and posting two more back-to-back in the shot put (eighth, 34-01.50) and high jump (seventh, 6-00.00).
Â
He improved his Summit League place-finishes in the 400m and high jump, last competing in the decathlon outdoors in 2017.
