SIOUX FALLS -- South Dakota State collected over 40,000 pounds of food and reclaimed the Summit League "Food Fight" title, edging defending champion Omaha to win its seventh crown in 11 years. The Jackrabbits' winning total was 40,607.43 pounds.
Omaha finished second with 40,389 pounds, and Denver, which took third, had just over 14,000 pounds.
South Dakota State's donations were given to the Brookings Food Pantry.
"Our student-athletes love coming together with our amazing Brookings community and Jackrabbit fan base to collect for the Summit League Food Fight," assistant athletic director Jennie Sell said. "Our efforts make a direct, positive impact and help many individuals and families who are faced with hunger and food insecurity."
Sell and academic advisor Rachel Steward work with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) to promote and coordinate "Food Fight" donations.
Each of the nine Summit League schools had one week scheduled around a fall athletic event and one week designated around a winter/spring athletic event to collect the food items. Total amounts were calculated from non-perishable food, cash, and online donations. This year's total collection of 126,772 lbs. is the second largest amount since the program's inception.
In the program's 11 years, more than 855,600 pounds of food has been collected for local Summit League communities.
