CHICAGO -- South Dakota State wide receiver Cade Johnson was one of 25 players named Wednesday to the initial watch list for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award, which is presented annually to the top offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.
A junior from Papillion, Nebraska, Johnson established a Jackrabbit single-season record with 17 touchdown catches as part of a 67-reception, 1,332-yard campaign in 2018. His four touchdown receptions in the Sept. 8 season opener against Montana State tied a single-game school record. He posted four other games with two touchdown receptions for an SDSU squad that recorded a 10-3 mark and reached the FCS semifinals for the second year in a row.
Johnson also has been a key contributor on special teams as he again led the Jackrabbits in kickoff returns with 462 yards on 17 attempts for an average of 27.2 yards in 2018. In his first season, he set an SDSU single-season record with 839 kickoff return yards, highlighted by two returns for touchdowns.
The watch list for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award will be updated periodically throughout the 2019 season, with the winner announced on the eve of the FCS national championship game in January 2020.
