South Dakota State women's soccer and Sanford Children's Cure Kids Cancer! have teamed up this season to host the first-ever GOALD Game, Saturday, Sept. 28 at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jackrabbits host New Mexico State at noon in the final nonleague game of the season, but the match will hold a deeper meaning as the organizations partner to raise awareness and support during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Â
"Childhood cancer impacts so many people, and it's never easy to witness a family fight this terrible disease," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "Our program believes in giving back and supporting our community, and it's exciting to host this GOALD Game."
Â
"My family lost a younger cousin, Ian, in 2018 to cancer, so this project means a lot to me," Jackrabbit redshirt freshman (and lead organizer for the event)
Hailee Fischer said. "I brought the idea of hosting a game for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to Brock after we lost Ian, and it's crazy to think that we're now here.
Â
"As a team we really wanted to get others involved because this disease affects so many. Our squad is excited for the GOALD Game events and we're looking forward to a great day supporting a great cause," Fischer said.
Â
Jackrabbit soccer will be selling GOALD Game t-shirts for $10 at the field, with proceeds benefiting Sanford Children's Cure Kids Cancer!
Â
Additionally, fans can support the cause by donating towards a "Pie in the Face" fundraiser, where the individual with the most money will be "pie'd" during the contest.
