BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State University baseball coach Rob Bishop announced Tuesday that three high school pitching standouts recently signed a National Letter of Intent, indicating they will enroll at SDSU next fall and compete for the Jackrabbits.
Â
"We are excited about each of the guys that have decided to join our program and university," Bishop said. "This year has been an especially challenging year for recruiting with COVID and the NCAA restrictions in place. Those circumstances make it even sweeter to welcome this group to South Dakota State. We expect big things from all of these guys and look forward to helping them develop on and off the field."
Â
The signees include:
• Jake Goble, pitcher, Rapid City;
• Joe Husak (pronounced HEW-sack), pitcher, Cambridge, Iowa, and
• Dane Toman, pitcher, Bellevue, Neb.
 JAKE GOBLE
Goble was an American Legion all-state hurler for Rapid City Post 22 this past summer, turning in an 8-2 record with a 1.75 ERA in helping lead his team to a state championship. The right-hander fanned 76 batters in 56 innings and also contributed at the plate with seven home runs and 45 runs batted in, while batting .333.
Â
Besides excelling in baseball, Goble has been an all-conference selection in football at St. Thomas More High School in Rapid City. A member of the National Honor Society, he intends to major in economics.
Coach Bishop's Comments: "Jake is a big, physical kid who has the potential to be a power arm at our level. During the past two years Jake has made tremendous progress on the mound and we believe he will be ready to compete early in his career. His intangibles fit what we are looking for in a member of our program. Jake is a great addition to our program and campus."
 JOE HUSAK
Husak, a converted catcher, has compiled a 14-4 record with five saves over the past three seasons for North Polk High School. He has earned all-conference and all-district honors each of the past two seasons, tallying 78 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched during the 2019 campaign and 51 K's in 32 2/3 innings in 2020. In addition, the right-hander has posted a sub-1.50 earned run average each of the last two years.
Â
An honor student, Husak plans to major in construction management.
Coach Bishop's Comments: "Joe is a guy who we are extremely excited about. He was a standout behind the plate in high school as well as an accomplished pitcher. After spending his last year focusing on the mound, he has made great strides in all areas. Joe has a chance to be a difference-maker in our program from day one."
 DANE TOMAN
Toman ranked third in the state of Nebraska with 62 strikeouts during a 2020 American Legion season in which his Bellevue West team reached the state semifinals.
Â
A member of the National Honor Society at Bellevue West High School, he has yet to declare a major.
Coach Bishop's Comments: "We had Dane in camp a few years back and liked him right from the start. His ability to command multiple pitches and his competitive nature will make him a great college pitcher. Dane is definitely a guy with his sights set high and we are looking forward to helping him achieve his goals in our program at South Dakota State."
Â
In addition, three other area standouts have been accepted for admission at SDSU and have announced their intentions to join the Jackrabbits next fall.
Â
Those commitments include:
• Reece Arbogast, pitcher, Sioux Falls;
• Tyson Kogel, infielder, Sioux Falls, and
• Carter Petron (pronounced PET-ron), pitcher, Rice, Minnesota.
 REECE ARBOGAST
Arbogast was a member of state championship teams at both O'Gorman High School and the Renner American Legion program in 2019. An all-state selection in both classifications, he earned Class A American Legion all-state honors for Renner in 2020 after compiling a 6-4 record with a 1.53 earned run average. The left-hander struck out 73 in 59 1/3 innings.
Â
A semifinalist for a National Merit scholarship and a member of the National Honor Society, he plans to major in mathematics.
Coach Bishop's Comments: "Reece has earned a ton of accolades for his academic and athletic prowess and deserves them all. He is a high achiever in every sense and we are really excited that he chose South Dakota State to continue his athletic and academic career. As a lefty with a ton of pitch ability, he is a terrific addition to our pitching staff."
 TYSON KOGEL
Kogel batted .390 as a sophomore at Harrisburg High School, followed by a .350 season during the 2020 American Legion season. He also posted a 1.35 earned run average in pitching duty this past season.
Â
A five-time varsity letterwinner in golf and member of the National Honor Society, Kogel intends to pursue a business degree.
Coach Bishop's Comments: "Tyson does a lot of things well, but his ability to hit and play all over the field makes him a great fit for Jackrabbit baseball. We expect his left-handed bat to make an impact on our offense early in his career. We are really excited to have another high-quality South Dakota player choose South Dakota State."
 CARTER PETRON
A left-hander, Petron was an all-conference selection for Royalton High School in 2019 and posted a 2.62 earned run average while competing at the Babe Ruth level during the summer of 2020.
Â
An honor student, he plans to major in precision agriculture.
Coach Bishop's Comments: "Carter is a projectable left handed pitcher who we feel has a really high ceiling on the mound. We think he was a guy who slipped under the radar a little bit and are really excited about his future as a Jackrabbit. Carter is a small-town Minnesota kid with a great work ethic and desire to achieve on the mound and in the classroom. He's a great fit at South Dakota State."
