SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State spotted Saint Mary's a 19-3 lead and couldn't recover, as the Jackrabbits suffered a 72-59 defeat at the hands of the Gaels in the fifth place game of the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic Friday night.
The Jackrabbits (1-2) didn't score their 10th point until the 6:04 mark of the first half, as the Gaels built up a 22-point advantage.
"It was a tough start," head coach
Eric Henderson said. "I thought we had some opportunities early, we didn't make a few looks around the rim and then we missed some free throws. Saint Mary's physicality got to us and then everything kind of snowballed on us."
The Jacks closed the first half on a 9-2 run and opened the second stanza with a bucket by
Douglas Wilson, trimming Saint Mary's edge to 38-26. On two other occasions, SDSU would draw to within 12, but the West Coast Conference foe never allowed State any closer.
SDSU shot 36 percent overall, 2-of-12 from deep and a mere 15-of-27 from the free throw line.
Noah Friedel was a bright spot on offense, scoring 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Alex Arians was SDSU's other double figure scorer, tallying 11 points and seven rebounds.
Alex Ducas paced Saint Mary's (2-1) with a game-high 25 points. The Gaels outrebounded the Jacks 43-31 and hit 10-of-26 3-pointers.
Game Notes
- Freidel recorded the ninth 20-point game of his career.
- The Jacks hit only two 3-pointers, their fewest since Jan. 8, 2020, when SDSU went 2-for-9 from long range in a road win over Denver.
- The game marked the first ever meeting between SDSU and Saint Mary's.
