Longtime Yankton High School coach and teacher Ginger Larsen has been selected as the 2020 recipient of the Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence at South Dakota State University.
Â
During a 33-year career from 1980-2003, Larsen coached four different sports, including starting Yankton's volleyball program. She led the Gazelles to a 206-122 record, won a pair of Eastern South Dakota conference titles (1997, 1998) and guided her squads to six top-four finishes in the Class AA State Tournament, highlighted by a pair of runner-up finishes.
Â
She also served as an assistant coach for four Yankton state championship teams in girls' basketball and three in track and field. Her other coaching duties included three years as head girls' tennis coach.
Â
Larsen was inducted into the Yankton Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
Â
A 1980 graduate of SDSU and a native of Irene, Larsen was a four-year letterwinner in basketball for the Jackrabbits.
Â
Larsen is the 43rd recipient of the Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence since it was first awarded in 1972. Recipients of the award must be graduates of SDSU and have distinguished themselves in the fields of coaching and education. The award's namesake coached football at South Dakota State from 1947-68, compiling a 113-89-9 record with nine North Central Conference titles in 22 seasons. Ginn's victory total stood as the most in program history until being passed by current Jackrabbit head coach John Stiegelmeier during the 2014 season.
Â
On-campus recognition of Larsen and the 2020 Jackrabbit Sports Hall of Fame class will be held at a later date.
