The South Dakota State soccer program and head coach
Brock Thompson announced two additions as part of Wednesday's National Signing Day. Lauren Eckerle and Sophia Hoffmann will enroll at SDSU and be eligible to play for the Jackrabbits next season.
Â
"With the majority of our team returning, we chose to be very selective this recruiting cycle," Thompson said. "Both Lauren and Sophia have a rare combination of ball-winning toughness and soccer sophistication. Above what they will bring to the field they are the right fit for our culture, and we glad they chose to be Jackrabbits."
Â
Lauren Eckerle (5-6, Midfielder – Hugo, Minn., White Bear Lake Area High School)
Lauren Eckerle joins the Jackrabbits from White Bear Lake Area High School where she amassed 31 goals and 28 assists during her career. Eckerle was tabbed first-team all-state in 2021 after she tallied 12 goals and 11 assists in her senior season.
Â
The 5-6 midfielder was an all-conference selection all four seasons of her high school career and earned second-team all-state honors in her junior season. Eckerle helped lead the White Bears to a 2019 conference championship and a section runner-up finish in 2021.
Â
A three-sport athlete throughout high school, Eckerle also played basketball and ran track for the White Bears. She has a 4.0 GPA and is a 2021 AP Scholar and National Honor Society member.
Â
Hear from Joe DeMay, Eckerle's club coach: "Lauren is a dynamic attacking player who excels at attacking space on the dribble and getting in dangerous positions off the ball to be an option for teammates going forward. She is a dominant player in the air and has an incredibly dangerous shot from distance that will help add to the explosive attack coach Thompson has put together."
Â
Sophia Hoffmann (5-6, Midfielder – Dike, Iowa, Dike-New Hartford High School)
Sophia Hoffmann joins South Dakota State from Dike-New Hartford High School where she was a difference-maker in the attacking third. Hoffmann earned 2021 first-team all-conference, first-team all-district and first-team all-state honors after she totaled 91 points in her junior season.
Â
Hoffmann was a prolific goal scorer for the Wolverines, finishing the 2021 season with 28 goals. Hoffmann also assisted on 35 goals, the most in the state across all classes.
Â
Hoffmann will finish her high school career with the Wolverines this spring. She has a 4.0 GPA and has been a member of the High School A Honor Roll since her freshman year.
Â
Hear from Justin Vorster, Sophia's club coach: "I remember when Sophia attended tryouts three years ago. Fifteen minutes into the session I had made the decision to sign her. It was not just her potential and ability as an individual, her personality and character made her an instant hit with the players and coaching staff. Her dedication, determination, discipline and desire to be a winner is unexplainable."
