SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State (6-2) closed out the Crossover Classic with a thrilling 80-76 victory over George Mason (4-4) Wednesday evening inside the Sanford Pentagon.
Noah Freidel (25) and
Baylor Scheierman (21) each logged 20-point games and were joined in double figures by
Douglas Wilson (14) and
Luke Appel (11).
Zeke Mayo registered a season-high four assists in the win.
The Jackrabbits shot 54.9% from the field, including 61.5% in the second half. Scheierman and Freidel each hit four triples as South Dakota State finished 10-of-20 from beyond the arc.
South Dakota State started 8-of-12 from the field and took a nine-point lead to prompt a George Mason timeout with 10:51 left in the opening half. Seven Jackrabbits had scored as SDSU maintained its nine-point advantage into the under-eight media timeout.
Freidel became the first Jackrabbit to reach double figures with back-to-back triples with 4:51 remaining in the first period. George Mason would close the half on a 10-2 run, capped by a step-back jumper from DeVon Cooper at the buzzer, to pull within 35-32 at the break.
The Patriots tied the game and then took the lead with three-pointers on their first two possessions of the second half. A step-back jumper from Scheierman gave SDSU its first points of the second period, snapping a scoring drought of over six minutes for the Jacks.
George Mason took a 51-44 lead but a 7-0 Jackrabbit run, including five straight points from Appel, tied the game at 51-51. Five consecutive points from Scheierman and a highlight reel alley-oop sparked a strong finish for South Dakota State as it went on to win, 80-76.
D'Shawn Schwartz scored 29 to lead the Patriots while Josh Oduro (20) and DeVon Cooper (15) joined him in double figures.
