LAWRENCE, Kan. – South Dakota State hit a season-high three home runs, including a go-ahead solo shot by Jocelyn Carrillo in the top of the 10th inning, to outlast Kansas, 15-11, in a series-opening softball game Wednesday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called off due to inclement weather moving into the area and will be made up as part of a twinbill Thursday starting at 3 p.m.
The Jackrabbits, 11-2 overall, used the long ball to build a 10-0 lead through their first three times to the plate. Cylie Halvorson put SDSU on the board with a two-run homer to left in the first inning and Lindsey Culver connected on a three-run blast as part of an eight-run third inning. In all, SDSU sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame, with Halvorson, Mia Elliott, Rozelyn Carrillo and Peyton Daugherty adding run-scoring hits.
Halvorson's homer was her team-leading fifth of the season, while Culver homered for the second time in 2021.
Kansas, 9-6 on the season, immediately cut into the deficit with a five-run home half of the third that was highlighted by a two-run single by Macy Omli and a three-run double by Morgyn Wynne. Omli also tripled in a run in the fourth inning and Wynne hit a solo homer in the fifth off Jackrabbit starter Grace Glanzer to pull the Jayhawks to within 10-8.
Tori Kniesche pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, but surrendered the tying run on a two-run home run by Brittany Jackson after a leadoff walk to Sydney Ramsey. The freshman right-hander settled in from there, keeping Kansas off the board until allowing a run in the bottom of the 10th. She struck out five and worked around six walks in five innings as she improved to 5-1 on the season.
In the meantime, the Jackrabbits put together a five-run top of the 10th, starting with Jocelyn Carrillo's first home run of the season to lead off the inning. Her sister, Rozelyn, re-started the rally with her fourth hit of the game, a single, and moved up a base on an error. Rozelyn Carrillo later scored on Halvorson's fourth RBI of the game with help of an error, while Elliott and Culver added run-scoring singles.
Culver also tallied four RBIs, while Daugherty and Emma Osmundson helped pace the Jackrabbits' 19-hit attack with three hits each.
