Former South Dakota State women's soccer defender and student assistant coach Annie Williams signed to play professionally for ÍBV in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland in the women's first division of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna league.
After signing a professional contract with Deportivo Saprissa of the Primera División in San Jose, Costa Rica back in January 2020, Williams will get another shot with a professional team.
"I am very excited to start playing in the Úrvalsdeild kvenna," Williams said. "I feel like my experience playing at SDSU and for Saprissa in Costa Rica has prepared me to compete at a very high level."
A native of Cottage Grove, Minn., Williams played for the Jackrabbits from 2015-18. She was named Summit League Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 and 2018. Also in 2018, Williams was selected onto the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Second Team.
Williams started 48 games as a Jackrabbit, including starting all 38 games in her final two seasons. The two-time All-Summit League First Team member (2017-18) she finished her career with three goals, five assists and 11 points in 5,138 career minutes on the pitch. The Jacks qualified for the NCAA Tournament twice in Williams' four years with the program. Williams served as a student assistant coach during the 2019 season before heading to Costa Rica.Â
"I will always look back at my time playing for the Jacks as a highlight in my soccer career," Williams said. "I had the privilege to play in a great program that allowed me to grow not only as a soccer player, but as a person. I would not be in the position I am today without my experiences at SDSU."
