LOUISVILLE, Ky. – South Dakota State pitcher Tori Kniesche remains in the running for the 2021 NFCA/Schutt Sports Division I National Freshman of the Year, organization officials announced Thursday.
The list will be further pared to three finalists on May 27, with the award winner announced June 1 in conjunction with the Women's College World Series.
A right-hander from Wayne, Nebraska, Kniesche ended the regular season with a 19-1 record and a 1.50 earned run average. Named the Summit League Pitcher of the Year, she has limited the opposition to a .139 batting average and has struck out 158 batters in 107 innings pitched. She has won her last 15 decisions and also recorded a save.
Further highlighting Kniesche's season thus far were a pair of five-inning no-hitters in the span of a week – April 24 versus South Dakota and April 30 against Creighton.
The initial list included 30 freshmen who began their collegiate careers in either 2020 or 2021, including Jackrabbit first baseman Cylie Halvorson. Despite being named Summit League Player of the Week earlier this week, Halvorson did not make the list of semifinalists.
South Dakota State begins play today at the Summit League Softball Championship with a 38-5 overall record. The Jackrabbits won their first-ever regular season conference title, posting a 21-1 mark in league play.
