South Dakota State softball coach Krista Wood has completed her staff with the hiring of former Bemidji State head coach and Iowa State standout Brittany Gomez-Olson.

"I am so blessed and incredibly thankful coach Wood has given me this great opportunity at South Dakota State," Gomez-Olson said. "Coach Wood and her staff have done such a great job working their way to this point and I can't wait to join this team and begin learning from these amazing female leaders. I am excited to get to work and help build the Jackrabbits program for years to come."

Gomez-Olson will provide a wealth of experience as both a coach and player to the program after serving as Bemidji State's head coach for two years and one year as an assistant for the Beavers. Prior to her time at Bemidji State, Gomez-Olson spent two years as a graduate assistant at Montana after an illustrious professional and collegiate playing career.

During her time as head coach at Bemidji State, Gomez-Olson helped lead 19 student-athletes to NSIC All-Academic Team with 11 selections to the All-Academic Team of Excellence.

In two seasons as a graduate assistant with Montana, Gomez-Olson and the Griz won a Big Sky Championship and made an NCAA Tournament appearance. Gomez-Olson helped coach eight players who earned All-Big Sky laurels and one who was named to the NFCA All-Region team.

Brittany will be able to connect with our players and develop them into better student-athletes on and off the field. One of the top hitters in Big 12 Conference history, Gomez-Olson wrapped up her collegiate playing career at Iowa State University in 2016. As Iowa State's leadoff hitter, Gomez-Olson became the first four-time All-Big 12 selection in Iowa State softball history. She was named a Second-Team All-Big 12 outfielder as a freshman, sophomore, and junior, while she was first-team all-league as a senior after batting .401 as an infielder.

Gomez-Olson started all 219 of Iowa State's games from 2013-16, and finished her career ranked third in Big 12 history in hits (297) and tied for fifth in stolen bases (110). At the conclusion of her career, she was also Iowa State's leader in career hits, batting average (.396), steals and runs scored (165).

Following her collegiate career, she was drafted 28th overall by the Pennsylvania Rebellion of the National Pro Fastpitch Softball League. In the summer of 2017, she played for the Texas Charge.

Gomez-Olson was selected for the U.S. Women's Baseball National Team in 2015 and helped Team USA win gold at the Pan American Games in Toronto. She made the team again in 2016, representing her country at the World Baseball Softball Confederation Women's Baseball World Cup in Gijang, South Korea. She was named to the Team USA roster for the third time and competed in the World Cup Aug. 22, 2018, in Viera, Florida.
