BROOKINGS, S.D. --
Zeke Mayo and
Baylor Scheierman's hot shooting helped lead South Dakota State to a dominant 84-65 conference victory over South Dakota in front of an energetic Frost Arena crowd on Saturday night.
Â
Mayo led the Jackrabbits with a career high 21 points, making a career high five 3-pointers while shooting 70% from the field. He also grabbed five rebounds and maintained his perfection from the free throw line, making each of his two shot attempts.
Â
Scheierman had a perfect night of shooting enroute to his 19 points, making 8-of-8 shots from the field and 3-of-3 shots from behind the arc. Scheierman also added in seven rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Â
Luke Appel and
Douglas Wilson also finished in double figures, scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
SDSU (13-4, 4-0 Summit League) shot 56.6 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from beyond the arc. The team also made 14-of-16 shots from the free throw line.
Â
South Dakota (7-7, 0-3), a team usually proficient at getting to the free throw line, was held to only four free throw attempts on the night. The Coyotes were led in scoring by Mason Archambault's 16 points.
Â
With an especially excited Jackrabbit crowd cheering them on, South Dakota State took a quick 11-0 lead early in the game, highlighted by a breakaway dunk from Scheierman, and never looked back.
Â
USD was eventually able to make it a three point game, cutting the Jackrabbit lead to 25-22 but it would never get closer, as SDSU turned the heat back up. The Jacks put together a 14-2 run over the final 3:26 of the half and took a huge 49-30 advantage into the break.
Â
Dominance continued for SDSU in the second half, as the lead never dipped below 16. Shots continuously fell for the Jackrabbits whenever USD tried to start something, putting the game out of reach for the rest of the final half.
