BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State softball team returns to play in 2023 as the Jackrabbits will gear up for a grueling schedule that was released on Friday, Dec. 30. The two-time defending Summit League champions will play nearly 40 games on the road before making their home debut in April.Â

"Our schedule features a lot of high-quality opponents that we're excited to put our team up to the test against," said SDSU head coach
Kristina McSweeney. "The early portion of our season we want to see how we stack up against a variety of programs Division I softball has to offer. I'm looking forward to witnessing our team come together as we build throughout the spring."

South Dakota State begins the 2023 season with 12 games spanning across four locations in Texas. The Jacks open the season against reigning Big Ten champion Nebraska in Houston on Feb. 10. SDSU then makes stops in Huntsville and Nacogdoches before a visit to San Marcos. The Jackrabbits will play five games in San Marcos from Feb. 17-19, including three against Texas State, a team that finished one spot behind SDSU in the RPI rankings at 49th a season ago.Â

SDSU makes trips south over consecutive weeks. The Jackrabbits will play in Central Arkansas' Michelle Short Memorial Classic from Feb. 24-26, then participate in the OSU/Tulsa Invitational in Oklahoma from March 3-5.Â

A trip to California will see the Jacks knock out seven games on their schedule. They'll compete at Cal Poly in the Mustang Classic from March 10-12. The Jackrabbits close out the trip with a March 15 doubleheader in Los Angeles against LMU, the 2022 West Coast Conference champions and NCAA Tournament participant.Â

The shift to conference play ends when the Jacks participate in a tournament held at Wichita State. SDSU will play two games each against Minnesota and Northern Colorado from March 17-19.Â

"We will be facing a lot of tough teams during a two-month span heading into Summit League play," McSweeney said. "We return a lot of experience, so I know when we get to conference action we will be ready to turn our focus to our main goal of winning a Summit League title."

SDSU will be on the road for its first two Summit League series' as the Jacks face Western Illinois (March 25-26) and St. Thomas (April 1-2).Â

The Jackrabbits make their home debut on April 7 with a doubleheader against Omaha. They close out the series the following day, while their remaining home series' include matchups versus North Dakota State (April 15-16) and South Dakota (May 5-6).Â

The Jacks slated a final non-conference game at Iowa State on April 11 to go along with away Summit League contests at North Dakota (April 22-23) and Kansas City (April 29-30).Â

South Dakota State is scheduled to again serve as host of The Summit League Softball Championship which is set for a May 10 start date in Brookings.Â
