DENVER, CO – South Dakota State used a massive 23-2 run midway through the second half to take a dominant lead over Denver enroute to an 84-61 victory inside Hamilton Gymnasium Thursday night.
The Jacks improve to 13-0 in conference play and are tied for the second longest active win streak in Division I basketball.
Douglas Wilson led the way in scoring as four Jackrabbits finished in double figures. Wilson scored 18 points, grabbed two steals and was the only player to attempt a free throw for SDSU, going 4-of-5 from the line.
Matt Mims added in a career-high 15 points while shooting 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Finally,
Baylor Scheierman and
Alex Arians tossed in 11 points each as Scheierman dished out a career-high nine assists and had two blocks.
SDSU shot 58.2 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent from three while connecting on 16 3-point shots. The team also finished with 32 points in the paint and handed out 23 assists.
First half action was a tight battle between the Jackrabbits (22-4, 13-0 Summit League) and Pioneers throughout all of the first 20 minutes, as neither side could get a major run started. A 3-pointer from Mims at the 13:52 mark made it a 17-12 lead from SDSU, but it wouldn't grow any farther than that.
Denver (9-18, 5-9) matched the Jacks in 3-point success in the first period and eventually responded with one of its own to tie up the contest. The final minutes of the half were hard-fought between each team, resulting in a 35-35 tie at the break.
Despite a quick and even start to the second half, hot shooting from the Jacks soon became the main storyline, as SDSU pieced together a monster 23-2 run starting at the 15:55 mark. The run featured four 3-pointers as six different Jackrabbits scored in the eight minute time span.
Denver made a field goal at the 7:39 mark to break the run, but then suffered 11 straight misses. Meanwhile, the success continued throughout the remainder of game time for the yellow and blue, which eventually led to the 84-61 victory.
