Kansas City, MO – South Dakota State men's basketball earned a hard fought 86-75 victory over Kansas City on Saturday night in Swinney Center to complete the first undefeated conference season in league history.
SDSU has now won 18 straight games, which is tied with Murray State for the longest active overall win streak in the country.
Baylor Scheierman led four Jackrabbit to double figures, finishing with 25 points while shooting 66.7 percent from the field and making 5-of-10 3-pointers.
Douglas Wilson had 17 points highlighted by two thunderous dunks while
Charlie Easley pitched in 14 and
Zeke Mayo scored 12.
SDSU (27-4, 18-0 Summit League) shot 53.7 percent from the floor, 45.0 percent from beyond the arc and 76.0 percent from the free throw line. The success from the 3-point again proved to be crucial for the Jacks, making nine shots, including six in the first half, compared to Kansas City's four.
First half action saw the most battle between the Jackrabbits and the Roos (19-11, 12-6) in the very physical contest. The match-up started off slow with several lead changes, but thanks to long range shooting from Scheierman and quick buckets from Easley and
Luke Appel, SDSU was able to build a lead. The margin hit 15 points off a monster dunk from Wilson at the 7:17 mark.
Kansas City would not go quietly, as that lead was soon sliced to five at the 3:13 mark off a bucket from Evan Gilyard. It eventually was a 39-36 game with 1:48 remaining in the half, but free throws from Appel and a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Easley made it a 45-36 Jackrabbits lead at the half.
Scheierman's impressive range continued into the second half, allowing SDSU to maintain a lead through all 20 minutes. Clutch free throw shooting and successful rebounding helped hold off several Kansas City charges during the last five minutes of play and led the way to history for the Jacks.
Kansas City was led by Josiah Allick, who finished with 21 points.
