South Dakota State softball has announced the addition of Abby Flanagan to the squad for the 2022-23 season.
Flanagan, a native of Coggon, Iowa, will transfer to SDSU from Des Moines Area Community College following the completion of her sophomore season. As a pitcher at DMACC, Flanagan has been a two-time ICCAC Athlete of the Week and was a first-team all-region pick last season. She guided the Bears to a fifth-place finish at the NJCAA national tournament in 2021.
Flanagan is a 2020 graduate of North Linn High School, where she was a five-time first-team all-conference and all-district pitcher. She was an all-state honorable mention as an eighth grader, then went on to earn second-team all-state honors as a freshman and first-team accolades as a sophomore, junior and senior. Flanagan was also tabbed as the Tri-Rivers Conference Player of the Year in her last three years as a Lynx.
In Flanagan's junior season North Linn won the 2A state title and Flanagan was named the captain of the 2A all-tournament team. The Lynx were runner-up when Flanagan was a senior and she was again named to the 2A all-tournament team.
Flanagan struck out 1,101 batters in her high school career, including a career-high 317 as a junior. She posted ERAs under 1.00 in three high school seasons - .40 as a sophomore and .55 as a junior and senior. In her first season at DMACC Flanagan struck out 180 batters and had a 2.76 ERA.
Off the diamond Flanagan has been a first-team academic all-region selection in all three semesters. She was a member of the National Honor Society in high school.
Flanagan also won a basketball state title in high school. Her twin sister plays basketball at Quincy.
Flanagan is the daughter of John and Krista Flanagan. She plans to major in ecology and environmental science.
