After leading South Dakota State to a sweep of a three-game weekend series against St. Thomas, the Jackrabbit baseball team also swept the TicketSmarter Summit League weekly awards Monday as Cody Carlson was named Pitcher of the Week and Henry George was honored as Player of the Week.
Â
A senior from Rapid City, Carlson became the first Jackrabbit pitcher to throw a complete-game, nine-inning shutout since 2019, tossing a two-hitter in the first game of a May 15 doubleheader. The left-hander struck out a career-high eight batters, did not walk a man (hit two), and limited the Tommies to singles in the second and ninth innings. Carlson's victory was his team-leading sixth of the season.
Â
Carlson became the second Jackrabbit pitcher in as many weeks to earn the award, following reliever Ryan Bourassa.
Â
George, a graduate transfer from Woodbury, Minnesota, batted .583 (7-for-12) and recorded a 1.417 slugging percentage as five of his hits went for extra bases. He opened the series by going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored.
Â
In the first game of the May 15 twinbill, George finished a single away from the cycle. He hit his first home run of the season on the first pitch of the game and also doubled and tripled en route to another 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two more RBIs and a pair of runs scored. George added another home run in the series finale to extend his hitting streak to six games.
Â
South Dakota State, 21-19 overall and 12-7 in The Summit League, wraps up the regular season by hosting Oral Roberts in a three-game series Thursday through Saturday. Thursday's series opener is slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Erv Huether Field.
