FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Three members of the South Dakota State men's track and field team competed in the NCAA West Preliminary Wednesday with two athletes advancing to the next round of their respective events.
Daniel Burkhalter clocked a personal best in the 1500-meter run, finishing in 3:41.63 to take sixth. That time is also the second fastest time in program history, sitting only behind Head Coach
Rod DeHaven's 3:40.15. Burkhalter advances to Friday's quarterfinal looking to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Reid Pierzinski also advances to a Friday quarterfinal. Pierzinski finished second in his heat and 14th overall in the 400-meter hurdles (51.27).
Trent Francom missed qualifying for the championship meet in pole vault by .10 meters. Francom took 15th in Wednesday's competition, recording a 5.19-meter mark.
Burkhalter and Pierzinski will compete again Friday evening. The 1500-meter quarterfinal is set for 5:15 p.m. Friday while the 400-meter hurdle quarterfinal is at 7:25 p.m.
