Former South Dakota State pitcher Bret Barnett has embarked on a professional playing career, signing a contract Friday with the Billings Mustangs.

A left-hander from Indianola, Iowa, Barnett ranks third on the SDSU career charts with 18 saves and 74 appearances from 2018-22. A first-team all-Summit League selection in 2019, he racked up 147 strikeouts in 111 1/3 career innings for a ratio of 11.88 strikeouts per nine innings that ranks second in program history.

During the recently completed 2022 season, Barnett earned seven saves in 15 appearances and allowed only one extra-base hit while striking out 46 batters in 30 innings.

The Billings Mustangs are a member of the independent Pioneer League. The team is managed by Jim Riggleman, who previously managed the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners and Washington Nationals.
