South Dakota State continues its three-game road trip on Saturday as the Jackrabbits make a trip to Macomb to take on Western Illinois. The Jacks and Leathernecks meet for the second time this season when the two sides tipoff at 2 p.m. in Western Hall.
The Jackrabbits earned a 71-64 victory over the Leathernecks in their first matchup this season on Dec. 29 in Frost Arena. SDSU trailed 61-56 with 5:19 left in the contest, then
Zeke Mayo scored 15 consecutive points for the Jacks -- including a span of 13 straight points between the two teams -- to propel the home side to a win. He finished with a career-high 33 points.
Three Leathernecks scored in double digits in the contest but the squad was outshot 49-38% by the Jackrabbits. Western Illinois' Trenton Massner was held to 6 of 19 shooting in the matchup while scoring 15 points. Following a 2-for-12 outing at South Dakota, Massner has scored double digits in seven straight games. That includes a school-record 46-point effort on Jan. 23 versus North Dakota and 23 points against South Dakota on Thursday, with his final field goal serving as a 3-point buzzer beater in a 75-72 win for WIU.
The Leathernecks are 13-8 this season and 6-4 in conference action. Massner (18.2), Alec Rosner (14.2), Vuk Stevanic (10.7) and Jesiah West (10.6) all average scoring in double digits. Western Illinois is on a four-game winning streak and is 9-2 at home.
SDSU had a four-game win streak halted on Thursday as the Jackrabbits fell at St. Thomas, 60-54. Neither team held a more than seven- point lead, but an 11-2 scoring run late in the first half and 8-0 spree late in the second half lifted the Tommies to their first win over SDSU since joining The Summit League.
Mayo scored a game-high 25 points for the Jacks. It was his eighth contest this year with 20-plus points.
Matt Dentlinger joined him in double digits with 15 points and had a team-high eight boards.
