Tyler Merriam, who has served as the radio voice of South Dakota State football for more than a decade, was named Wednesday as the 2022 winner of the Bill Schwanke Award. The award is presented annually to the top play-by-play radio broadcaster in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Â
Merriam was one of seven finalists for the award, which is named in honor of longtime Montana Grizzlies radio announcer Bill Schwanke. A voting panel including Tim Brando from Fox Sports, Paul Pabst of the Dan Patrick Show, Freddie Coleman from ESPN, as well as Kevin Marshall and Stone Labanowitz of FCS Nation Radio, decide the winner.
Â
Merriam's next broadcast will be the FCS national title game Sunday afternoon in Frisco, Texas, when the top-seeded Jackrabbits take on defending champion North Dakota State. Coverage along the Jackrabbit Sports Network, including flagship station WNAX 570 AM, begins at 11 a.m., with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
