BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State men's basketball team opens 2023 with the first of three consecutive away games as the Jackrabbits take on North Dakota State in Fargo at 7 p.m. Thursday. The game serves as the first between the two programs since the 2022 Summit League Championship matchup.Â
Â
SDSU topped NDSU by a combined eight points in two regular season victories a season ago. The conference title matchup proved to be just as competitive with four tie scores and two lead changes. It was a 56-all contest with 5:45 remaining, but the Jackrabbits shot 48.2% from the field and 81.3% at the free throw line in the second half to hold off the Bison in a 75-69 victory at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.Â
Â
NDSU holds the all-time series lead over SDSU, 120-112, however the Jackrabbits have the upperhand of late. The Jacks have won 11 of the last 13 matchups, while
Eric Henderson is 6-2 as SDSU's head coach. The Jackrabbits are 39-67 when taking on the Bison in Fargo.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits won both their opening Summit League home games in Frost Arena this past week by 71-64 scores. The Jacks were paced by
Zeke Mayo's career-high 33 points in the Thursday win over Western Illinois.
Matt Dentlinger had a season-high 22 points, and Mayo contributed with a double-double, in the Saturday victory against St. Thomas. SDSU improved to 7-8 overall, and 2-1 in Summit League play, with the wins in Brookings.Â
Â
Mayo's back-to-back performances earned him his first Summit League Men's Basketball Peak Performer of the Week award. During the week he averaged 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. He leads SDSU scoring 14.8 points and grabbing 6.5 rebounds through 15 contest this season.Â
Â
NDSU is 4-11 overall and 1-2 in the league heading into Thursday's matchup. Under ninth-year coach David Richman, the Bison feature three double-digit scorers in Grant Nelson (16.1), Boden Skunberg (13.1) and Andrew Morgan (10.5).Â
