VERMILLION, S.D. - The South Dakota State volleyball team dropped a five-set match to South Dakota Tuesday night. After the Jacks went up 2-0, the Coyotes came all the way back to win with a reverse sweep.
Sylvie Zgonc averaged 10 kills per set over the opening two frames, helping the Jackrabbits to 25-19 and 26-24 wins. She cooled off over the next three sets but still finished with a career-best 26 kills. Zgonc, a freshman, also tallied 11 digs, three block assists and an ace.
Katie Van Egdom added 16 kills for South Dakota State, followed by
Masa Scheierman with nine and
Sydni Schetnan with eight. Schetnan also recorded 11 block assists, finishing one shy of the Jackrabbits' program record for a five-set match.
Raegen Reilly (25) and
Rylee Martin (24) combined for 49 of SDSU's 55 total assists. Reilly contributed seven digs and an ace while Martin chipped in six blocks and four digs.
Stella Winterfeld had 15 digs and four assists.
Joslyn Richardson made her first appearance in the regular rotation this year and posted eight digs.
Akeela Jefferson finished with three ace serves and four digs.
USD's Kylen Sealock and Madison Harms put down 16 kills apiece. Brooklyn Schramm dished 47 assists and Kamryn Farris had 30 digs and three aces.
The sides were fairly even in most categories, however the Jackrabbits had a season-high 14 service errors compared to nine errors by the Coyotes. SDSU's 15 total blocks is a season best.
Set one: The Jackrabbits built an 8-5 lead in the opening set courtesy of a 5-1 run. With the Jacks leading 11-7, USD notched six straight to take the lead. The Jackrabbits trailed 18-17 when Jefferson went to the service line and tallied two aces during a seven-point run to go up 23-18. Zgonc put down three kills in the stretch. Martin and Schetnan teamed up on a block to win it, 25-19.
Set two: USD opened up an 11-5 lead and stretched it to 15-8. Zgonc had five kills during a 6-0 run to bring SDSU back within one, 15-14. A Schetnan and Zgonc block tied the set at 16-all. The sides traded points until a 24-23 lead for the Coyotes. SDSU came back with the next three points - a block by Schetnan and Martin, an ace by Reilly and a kill by Zgonc - to go up 2-0 in the match.
Set three: The Jacks had a 4-1 lead early and held onto it until a 3-0 run put the Coyotes ahead, 10-9. Two straight points gave SDSU the lead back and then neither side scored consecutive points until three straight made it 18-16 for USD. The Jacks battled back and tied the set against at 23 off a Martin solo block. USD tallied the next two to force the fourth set.
Set four: After an 8-8 tie in the fourth set, USD scored 11 of the next 12 to go up 19-9.
Elyse Winter ended the run with a kill, then the teams traded points until 22-13. USD scored three of the final four points to even the match at 2-2.
Set five: The Coyotes opened the final set with a 5-0 run and led 8-2 at the side change. SDSU came all the way back to tie the set at 8-8 behind two kills and two blocks from Schetnan. USD surged ahead again, 12-8, and went on to win 15-10.
NOTES
- South Dakota State is 0-3 in five-set matches this season.
- USD has won 17 straight contests. SDSU's last win was October 13, 2015 at Frost Arena.
- Sylvie Zgonc has six double-doubles this season.
