BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota State volleyball evened its Summit League record at 7-7 Thursday night with a 3-0 sweep over North Dakota at Frost Arena. The victory clinched a spot in the Summit League postseason tournament for the Jackrabbits.
Sylvie Zgonc led all players with 12 kills on the match and contributed eight digs. She was followed by
Sydni Schetnan, who tallied eight kills at a .538 clip (one error, 13 swings) and posted a match-high five blocks.
Masa Scheierman also had eight kills to go with three digs, two blocks and an ace serve.
Rylee Martin recorded 20 assists, three kills and two blocks.
Raegen Reilly had 11 assists, six digs and put down two kills on two attacks.
Stella Winterfeld led the defense with 10 digs.
Elyse Winter led the way with three ace serves and had five digs, three kills and two blocks.
The Jackrabbits finished with a 40-32 advantage in kills and a 7-4 edge in both aces and blocks. SDSU hit a blistering .526 in the opening set and finished with a .232 clip. The Fighting Hawks were held to .099 hitting.
Lauren Perugini had nine kills to lead UND.
Set one: The Jacks opened the contest with six straight points off the serve of Winter. The junior notched a pair of aces during the stretch while
Masa Scheierman notched two kills and an ace. UND stayed within striking distance until a 5-0 run put the Jacks ahead, 22-12. SDSU won the set 25-16.
Set two: The Hawks went up 9-5 in the second set and led the majority of the set. SDSU got back within one at 15-14 and later used a 6-1 run capped by an
Akeela Jefferson ace to lead 24-21. After a pair of kills by the Hawks, Zgonc notched a kill from Martin for the win.
Set three: The sides traded points through the opening half of the final set and were tied at 13-all. Zgonc sparked a 5-1 run that put the Jackrabbits ahead for good. The Hawks pulled back within one, then four straight points made it 23-18 for SDSU. UND battled to stay in it but the Jacks ultimately won 25-22.
NOTES
- SDSU is 9-17 on the season and 7-7 in the Summit League. UND dropped to 6-20 overall and 3-11 in conference action.
- The Jackrabbits have clinched a spot in their third consecutive Summit League postseason.
- SDSU's seven aces matches the team's season high in a three-set match.
