CHICAGO — Led by three-time first-team selection Garret Greenfield, five South Dakota State players were honored Tuesday on the 2023 Stats Perform FCS All-America Team.
Â
A senior from Rock Valley, Iowa, Greenfield has manned the left tackle position for a Jackrabbit squad that has allowed only 10 sacks all season. In advancing to the Football Championship Subdivision national title game for the third time in four seasons, SDSU has averaged 230.5 yards per game on the ground and 225.6 yards per game through the air.
Â
Greenfield previously was a first-team All-America selection during the 2020-21 spring season and again in 2022.
Â
Fellow offensive lineman Mason McCormick moved up to the first team after receiving second-team honors in 2022. A senior from Sioux Falls, McCormick played alongside Greenfield at left guard, helping pave the way for a Jackrabbit offensive attack that ranks third among FCS teams with a scoring average of 38.4 points per game.
All four of the Jackrabbits' selections on offense were named to the first team, including junior quarterback Mark Gronowski. One of the top-three finalists for the Walter Payton Award, Gronowski ended the 11-game regular season leading the FCS in passing efficiency and has maintained that ranking through three playoff games with a 182.72 rating while throwing for 2,883 yards and 28 touchdowns against only four interceptions. The junior from Naperville, Illinois, also has rushed for 349 yards and seven scores during the 2023 campaign.
Â
Gronowski's backfield mate Isaiah Davis earned first-team recognition at running back after topping the 1,000-yard mark in regular season play. With three 100-yard performances in the playoffs, the Joplin, Missouri, native has tallied 1,491 rushing yards (106.5 ypg) this season, averaging 6.8 yards per carry with 17 touchdowns. He has added 22 receptions for 196 yards and a touchdown.
Â
Representing the Jackrabbit defense on the Stats Perform FCS All-America Team was Jason Freeman, who was a third-team selection at linebacker. A senior from Zion, Illinois, Freeman registered a team-best 72 tackles during the regular season and has added 24 more stops in the postseason. He also has been involved in five takeaways — three fumble recoveries and two interceptions — for an SDSU defense allowing an FCS-best 9.7 points per game.
Â
South Dakota State, 14-0 overall and the winner of 28 consecutive games dating back to 2022, will face Montana in the FCS national title game Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas.
