BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State soccer has added a pair of standouts to its program from California as Jadenn Carrillo (Anaheim Hills) and Maleah Evans (Sacramento) have signed paperwork to join the Jackrabbits for the 2023 season.
Â
Carrillo spent the past four years playing at the Division II level for Concordia University Irvine. Evans completed her first two seasons of soccer at the junior college level at City College of San Francisco. Carrillo makes her way to Brookings with one season of eligibility remaining while Evans has two years.Â
Â
"Adding both Jadenn and Maleah adds experience to our attack," said South Dakota State head coach
Brock Thompson. "With the group we have coming back, it's incredibly valuable to add players that have produced at the college level. We look forward to what Jadenn and Maleah will bring to the field in the fall."

Jadenn Carrillo | 5-4 | Senior | Forward | Anaheim Hills, Calif. | Villa Park HS | Concordia University Irvine
Carrillo has been a mainstay for the Concordia Irvine Golden Eagles and is among their career leaders in multiple categories. The Anaheim Hills native played in 56 games and started in 55 during her tenure at CUI. She broke out her freshman year by scoring 11 goals and was rewarded as the PacWest Conference Freshman of the Year. Carrillo would go on to earn All-PacWest First Team honors that season behind a program-record six game-winning goals that year.Â
Â
Following a shortened 2020 season due to COVID, Carrillo returned in 2021 to claim All-PacWest Second Team honors. She finished second on the team in goals (4) and points (11) that season.Â
Â
Her 2022 season happened to be the best of her college career. This past year, Carrillo racked up 11 goals and seven assists for a career-high 29 points. The 29 points were the fourth most in a single season at CUI. Her 2022 campaign featured a hat trick as part of a seven-point outing and another game with a brace. An All-PacWest First Team honoree in 2022, Carrillo helped lead the Golden Eagles to a NCAA DII West Regional Final appearance where they fell to eventual national champion Western Washington.Â
Â
Carrillo completed her tenure at CUI with a shots on goal percentage of .512. Her 65 career points rank her fifth in program history, her 27 goals placed her fifth all-time and she finished in the top 10 in assists (11). She is the Golden Eagles' school record holder in shots (240) and shots on goal (123). She has an older sister, McKenna, that previously played at Concordia. Prior to her college experience, Carrillo was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Villa Park High School and earned four all-league selections.
Â
"Jadenn is a traditional center forward that adds talent to a very thin area on our team," Thompson said. "She's a crafty player that can score goals herself, but also set other players up. With the attacking players that we have, she'll fit in very nicely with her style of play."
Â
Maleah Evans | 5-7 | Wing | Sacramento, Calif. | Choices Charter | City College of San Francisco
Evans spent the past three years at City College of San Francisco with the last two seasons serving as a major contributor for the Rams. In the fall of 2021, Evans spearheaded a conference championship team offensively by scoring 14 goals and dishing out six assists to finish second on the team with 34 points. She finished the year with team highs in shots (55) and game winners (5) while registering a shots on goal percentage of .745. She was named a first-team all-conference performer and her conference's Freshman of the Year.Â
Â
She continued her stellar play in 2022. Evans played and started in 19 games for a second consecutive season and saw her statistics improve. She scored 20 goals and had eight assists for a team-best 48 points. Evans again led her squad in shots (64) and game winners (3), while also owning a strong shots on goal percentage of .734. The 2022 campaign saw Evans earn her conference's Player of the Year award. She was also named to the 2022 All-State and All-Northern California Teams by the CCCSCA.Â
Â
Evans led a team that finished the 2022 season ranked No. 13 in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. She ended her tenure at CCSF with 10 multi-goal games, which included four hat tricks, and two games with three assists.Â
Â
"Maleah has quite a bit of pace and is very good in 1v1 situations," Thompson said. "We'll look for her to play kind of in the wide channel. She's also versatile enough that she could slide into a few places, but her skillset in isolation is something that really matches the way we play. We look forward to having her a part of Jackrabbit soccer."

The South Dakota State soccer team is in the midst of its spring training schedule in preparation for the 2023 season.Â
