THROWERS SHINE IN DAY ONE AT USD

VERMILLION, SD – The South Dakota State track and field teams kicked off competition at the USD Early Bird and found much success on both the track and field on Friday at the Lillibridge Track Complex.
Many top five finishes came from the SDSU throwers, highlighted by Hunter Wallster's performance. He made waves in the hammer throw after taking fourth place with a personal best 201-10.50, now the second best mark in school history. Calob Jones also took 10th place in the event with a personal best 180-07.00.
Dominick Etherington took third place in the shot put with his mark of 59-07.75 and Noah Jessup also threw a personal best 48-06.00.
As for the women's throwers, Faith Leiseth took runner-up in the discus with her mark of 165-01.50 while Mildred Young finished fifth with a 149-11.25.
Nora Peterson claimed third in the javelin with a throw of 141-10.75 that is now the fourth best mark in SDSU history
In other men's competition, Carter Knaus took sixth place in the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 1:53.05 while Eli Salisbury finished 11th in 1:56.69.
Nathan Notgrass led the way for the Jackrabbits in the 1500-meter run with his time of 4:03.05 for ninth place. Kyle Nordling clocked a personal best 4:04.93 for 14th place and Tyler O'Neill took 32nd in a personal best 4:17.77.
Jeremiah Donahoe clocked a 58.44 in the 400-meter hurdles to take seventh in his heat and 20th place overall.
Ryan Benson currently sits in fourth place of the decathlon with 3460 points after five events. He earned personal bests in the 100-meter dash (11.24), shot put (35-03.25) and 400-meter dash (52.08).
In action for the women's team, Greta Johnson cleared 10-09.50 in the pole vault for a 19th place finish overall, narrowly missing her personal best.
Claire Beckman ran a 2:16.10 in the 800-meter run for a second place overall finish.
In the 1500-meter run, all four runners clocked personal bests. Nina Dawson finished 13th in 4:51.57, Emma Gonzalez ran a 4:57.84 for 19th place, Sierra Watterud came in 23rd place with a time of 5:00.68 and Malorie Schmoll rounded out the finishers in 31st place with a 5:03.68.
Bridget Henne claimed 15th place in the 5000-meter run with a time of 19:05.78.
Jenna Johnson ran a 1:04.12 in the 400-meter hurdle for a personal best and a seventh place finish, while Laura Bogue took ninth in a personal best 1:05.08 and Abby Hughes took 15th in 1:06.68 for a PR.
In the heptathlon, Lizzy Gillingham sits in fifth place with 2749 points while Robyn Dayton is in 14th with 2170 points. Lizzy ran a personal best 15.57 in the 100-meter hurdles while Robyn earned a PR in the high jump (4-11.50).
Action on Saturday is set to resume in Vermillion at 9:30 a.m. on the field, 10 a.m. for the multi events and 11:45 a.m. for the running events.
