CHICAGO — Six South Dakota State veterans were honored Wednesday as members of the 2024 Stats Perform FCS All-America Team. Leading the way were first-team selections Gus Miller, Dalys Beanum and Caleb Francl.
Â
A senior from Brookings, Miller has anchored a Jackrabbit offensive line that paved the way for SDSU to average 36.6 points and 441.9 yards of total offense during the regular season. Miller was honored as the 2023 recipient of the Rimington Award as the top center in the Football Championship Subdivision and earlier this week was named to The Associated Press All-America First Team.
Â
Beanum, a senior cornerback from Omaha, Nebraska, ended the regular season with 37 total tackles (25 solo), while also contributing an interception, a pass breakup and a forced fumble. He played a key role for a Jackrabbit defense that gave up only eight passing touchdowns in 12 regular season games and did not allow a team to pass for more than 200 yards in league play.
Â
Francl, a senior linebacker from Grand Island, Nebraska, was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in the FCS ranks this season. He was active all over the field, registering 64 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 4 pass breakups and a sack during regular season play. As a defensive unit, the Jackrabbits led the FCS in scoring average (12.4 points per game) and ranked in the top 10 for rushing defense at 90.5 yards per game through the regular season.
Â
Second-team recognition on the Stats Perform FCS All-America Team went to offensive lineman Evan Beerntsen and linebacker Adam Bock.
Â
A native of De Pere, Wisconsin, Beerntsen has been a three-year starter at right guard. In 12 games during the 2024 regular season, the Jackrabbits allowed only six sacks and led the FCS in fewest tackles for loss allowed at 2.58 per game.
Â
A native of Solon, Iowa, Bock registered a team-best 75 tackles during the regular season and also led the squad with eight tackles for loss. A three-time first-team honoree on the all-MVFC squad, he currently ranks second on the career tackles chart at SDSU with 438.
Â
Beanum, Bock and Beerntsen were all second-team selections to the AP All-America squad announced on Tuesday.
Â
Closing out the six-member All-America class for the Jackrabbits was senior quarterback Mark Gronowski. The signal-caller from Naperville, Illinois, is closing out one of the all-time great careers in FCS history, which included winning the Walter Payton Award in 2023. This season, Gronowski completed 61.8 percent of his passes (173-of-280) for 2,190 yards and 17 touchdowns in 12 regular season games. He also rushed for 309 yards and five scores in 12 games.
Â
A four-year starter, Gronowski has matched the FCS record for wins by a quarterback with 49 entering Saturday's national semifinal game at North Dakota State. His career totals include 10,105 yards and 92 touchdowns through the air, along with 1,717 yards and 36 touchdowns on the ground.
Â
SDSU's six selections ranked behind top-ranked Montana State's seven honorees.
