LEXINGTON, Ky. — South Dakota State began play at Kentucky's John Cropp Classic on Thursday with back-to-back meetings against Ohio State and the host Wildcats. The Jacks dropped a close contest against the Buckeyes, 10-8, before Kentucky closed the day with a five-inning 8-0 win over SDSU at John Cropp Stadium.
Â
The Jackrabbits and Buckeyes were tied at 1-1 as each scored a run in the second.
Rozelyn Carrillo hit a one-out single and was plated on an RBI double by
Alli Boyle to tie the score in the bottom of the frame.Â
Â
Ohio State took the lead for good in the third by plating four runs on four hits, most of which came on a three-run home run. SDSU cut the score to 5-2 in the bottom of the frame when
Lindsey Culver hit a solo home run with two outs.Â
Â
SDSU added another run to its total in the fourth.
Jocelyn Carrillo got a rally going with two outs behind a single. A single by
Cheyanne Masterson put two runners on base, then a single to left field by
Mia Jarecki scored Carrillo to make it a 5-3 ballgame.Â
Â
The Jacks stayed in the contest thanks to two scoreless innings from
Hailey Herman, however the Buckeyes extended their advantage in the fifth. Ohio State produced five runs on four hits, along with a walk and hit by pitch, to go up 10-3.Â
Â
SDSU wasn't done at the plate though.
Emma Osmundson was hit by a pitch, Culver walked and
Rozelyn Carrillo earned a walk to load the bases.
Jocelyn Carrillo came up and hit a double which plated all three runners to make it 10-6. Masterson then drove in Carrillo to cut the score to 10-7.Â
Â
The sixth inning saw Culver hit another solo home run to make it a 10-8 score. After a scoreless top of the seventh for the Buckeyes, SDSU was unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the inning as Ohio State closed things out.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits finished the game with 10 hits. Jarecki, Culver, Masterson and
Jocelyn Carrillo each had multi-hit performances. Culver's multi-home run showing was the fourth of her college career and team's first this season.
Akayla Barnard was credited with the loss in the circle.
Alexa Williams threw two innings of scoreless relief giving up just one hit.Â
Â
South Dakota State dropped its nightcap to the Wildcats 8-0 on Thursday. The Jackrabbits best opportunity at the plate came in the top of the first. SDSU drew three straight walks with two outs to bring
Rozelyn Carrillo up, but the Wildcats got out of the jam.Â
Â
SDSU starter
Shannon Lasey kept No. 23 Kentucky off the board in the first. However, the Wildcats scored at least one run in each of the next four innings, including a three-run home run in the fifth, to close the game out. The Jackrabbits were able to only get one hit in the game thanks to a second-inning single by Boyle.Â
