ST. PAUL, MN – South Dakota State tallied three medals and numerous finals qualifications in day two of competition at the 2024 Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The headlining finish came in the women's long jump where
Jaiden Boomsma took the crown. She won the title with a new personal best of 19-11.75—a mark she jumped twice during Friday's competition—and now sits second in SDSU history.
Caiden Fredrick grabbed SDSU's first medal of day two as he finished third in the finals of the men's shot put with his throw of 53-04.50.
Ryan Hackbart (46-07.50, PR) also took seventh.
Josh Becker took third place in the final event of the night, running a 9:02.50 in the 3000-meter steeplechase for a trip to the podium.
Cody Larson (9:11.13) was fifth and
Jackson Dutcher (9:17.54, PR) was seventh.
Ryan Benson finished fourth overall in the decathlon with 6,634 points, the sixth-best total in SDSU history. He earned PRs in the 400-meter dash (51.92), javelin throw (170-06.00) and 1500-meter run (4:36.60) during his run.
Connor Powers took fourth place in the high jump with his mark of 6-07.50 while
Carson Kirwan cleared 6-05.50 for a seventh place finish.
Kayla Christopherson finished fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with the ninth-fastest time in school history (10:52.71, PR) while
Nina Dawson (seventh, 11:07.28, PR) also scored for the Jackrabbits.
Milee Young scored for SDSU in the finals of the women's shot put as she finished sixth overall with a PR of 44-06.25.
A plethora of Jackrabbits will be competing in a variety of Summit League finals after achieving qualifications on Friday, like Boomsma, who will join
Rich-Ann Archer in the 100-meter dash finals.
Savannah Risseeuw qualified for the 100-meter hurdle finals after clocking a new personal best of 13.85, which ties for fourth in SDSU history. She will also compete in the 400-meter hurdle finals while
Brielle Dixon will join her in the 100-meter hurdles finals.
Erika Kuntz tied her PR of 56.01 to maintain sixth on the SDSU All-Time List and qualify for the 400-meter dash finals alongside
Jessica Boekelheide (56.54, PR).
Grace Waage ran the eighth-fastest time in school history to qualify for the finals of the 800-meter run with teammate
Claire Beckman.
Carter Johnson will represent SDSU in the finals of the men's 110-meter hurdles while
Jake Werner will compete in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash finals.
James Pierce and
Thailan Hallman will move on to the men's 400-meter dash finals and
Jeremiah Donahoe has earned a big to the final race of the 400-meter hurdles.
Brandon Kampsen and
Daniel Burkhalter will compete in the Summit League 800-meter run finals.
The South Dakota State men currently sit third in the team standings with 65 points while the women are fourth with 56.5 points.
Competition will continue on Saturday in the final day of the championship meet. Field events will begin at 11 a.m. with track events to follow at 1 p.m.
