ST. PAUL, MN – South Dakota State track and field sits third in each the men's and women's team standings after earning six medals in the opening day of the conference championship meet.
Hunter Wallster started things off strong for the Jackrabbits as he took the Summit League crown in the hammer throw with his winning mark of 189-04.00. Also scoring were
Caiden Fredrick (fifth place, 163-04.00, PR) and
Ethan Fischer (sixth place, 158-08.00, PR).
Leah Hisken also took home gold as she defended her 10k title in a time of 35:23.27.
Jessica Lutmer joined her on the podium after finishing third in 35:44.41.
Emma Gonzalez took seventh in 36:35.52 and
Jenna Soine was eighth in 36:54.26.
In the men's 10k,
Carson Noecker claimed runner-up with a clocking of 29:59.61, which broke a 39-year-old championship meet record.
Will Lohr took home bronze with his time of 30:20.64 for third and
Cormick Logue came seventh in 30:36.75.
Nora Peterson finished as runner-up in the women's javelin throw, recording a mark of 149-00.00 for the silver medal.
Ryann Moline also threw a PR of 133-05.00 to finish fifth and now sits ninth on the SDSU All-Time List.
Laci Leverty was sixth in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-10.75, just .25 off her personal best, while over in the high jump,
Taylor Jochum and
Layne Kirkendoll each scored for SDSU, finishing sixth (5-05.75) and tied for eighth (5-03.75), respectively.
Through five events of the men's decathlon,
Ryan Benson sits in fifth place with 3546 points. He ran a new personal best of 51.92 in the event's 400-meter dash.
Competition will continue at O'Shaughnessy Stadium on Friday starting at 9:45 a.m. with the multi events and will follow with field at 4 p.m. and track at 6 p.m.
